SPF EMERGENCY: O2 LAUNCHES ‘SUN CASE’ | A SUNSCREEN TOP UP PHONE ACCESSORY

To coincide with Skin Cancer Awareness MonthO2 has created the ‘Sun Case’ – this summer’s must-have mobile accessory that comes with Green People’s natural and organic facial sunscreen to encourage holidaymakers to protect their skin and their roaming bills while soaking up the sun this summer.

Taking inspiration from Hailey Bieber’s viral Rhode ‘Lip Case’, O2’s Sun Case is a chic and convenient mobile accessory that sticks neatly onto the back of a variety of phones so any one can use it, aiming to remind holiday goers to pay as much attention to their sun protection as they do to their mobile phone – which 65% state they prioritise packing over sunscreen (57%)*. Backed by The British Skin Foundation, the 100% sustainable bioplastic phone accessory comes as research reveals that despite 90% of Brits thinking it’s important to protect their skin, only two in five (43%) always wear sunscreen while on holiday.

With a shocking 6.4 million British holidaymakers admitting they shun sunscreen in pursuit of catching a tan, the Sun Case aims to act as a regular reminder of the importance of ‘topping-up’, as research from O2 reveals 85% of individuals who frequently forget to apply sunscreen would like a product that assists them in remembering. Research also shows that holiday makers are three times more likely to forget their sunscreen (15%) than their mobile phone (5%).

Among those who do apply sunscreen, nearly one in 10 (8%) only do so when they feel they ‘might’ be burning, despite 76% admitting getting burnt has a negative effect on their holiday. According to the British Skin Foundation, just ten minutes exposure when the UV index is high has the potential to cause sunburn depending on skin type.

The research found that people’s top reasons for applying sunscreen include fear of getting skin cancer (47%), preventing ageing skin (32%) and a family member experiencing skin cancer (28%), whilst reasons for not wearing sunscreen include forgetting or not buying any (24%), it being too oily or sticky (20%) and not liking how it feels on the skin (14%).

Combining potent plant antioxidants with all-important SPF30, Green People’s Age Defy+ Daily SPF30 Moisturiser – which boasts 5-star reviews – gives 2-in-1 defence against sunburn and sun-induced skin ageing. Other key features of the natural and organic sunscreen include:

  • High-factor protection: SPF30 shields against 97% of UVB rays. It works in synergy with antioxidant-rich Edelweiss to defend against free radical damage.
  • Skin comfort: Non-nano UV filters allow all skin types to enjoy the sun without discomfort.
  • Moisturising skin hydration: Fortified with anti-ageing actives, buds from the Everlasting Youth Tree smooth fine lines as they boost hydration by 30%.
  • Natural protection: This ocean-friendly SPF contains absolutely no Oxybenzone or Octinoxate.

From walking about in the midday sun or needing a top-up by the pool after towelling off, the Sun Case will ensure no one is caught short in an SPF emergency. As the only major network operator to offer free EU roaming up to 25GB, O2 wants to protect its customers from getting burnt by unwanted roaming costs, whilst educating consumers about the harmful effects of the sun.

The limited-edition free mobile phone accessory will be available at selected O2 stores across the country from 15 May 2024, while stocks last, including London, Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast, so people, regardless of their mobile provider, can grab one ahead of holiday season. Members of the public simply need to head to a participating O2 store and say “don’t get burnt” to a staff member at the till to get theirs.

Virgin Media broadband and O2 customers can also enjoy an exclusive 30% discount on all Green People products via Priority from O2 from 1st May 2024 until 31st May 2024, helping to keep their skin protected while they’re out and about in the sun this summer.

Sun Case launches ahead of a wider campaign to highlight the unique benefits of roaming on O2. For more sun safety tips, visit The British Skin Foundation here.
