SCOTLAND FANS IMMORTALISED IN HEINEKEN’S ‘FABRIC OF THE NATION’ SOUNDWAVE KILT AHEAD OF SUMMER FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

Scotland’s football supporters have long been celebrated as some of the most passionate fans in world football, with the famous “Hampden Roar” becoming synonymous with the nation’s unwavering support. Now, that passion has been transformed into a unique piece of Scottish fashion thanks to a new collaboration between Heineken UK and award-winning Scottish designer Siobhan Mackenzie.

The result is the ‘Fabric of the Nation’ kilt – a bespoke design inspired by the soundwaves of one of Scotland’s most iconic football chants, “We’ll Be Coming”, sung by the legendary Tartan Army.

A Celebration of Scotland’s Football Culture

While only a limited number of supporters will be able to travel and watch Scotland compete on the international stage in person this summer, the project aims to unite fans across the globe by celebrating the energy and atmosphere they bring to every match.

Working alongside Scottish fashion designer Siobhan Mackenzie and photographer Sam Gregg, Heineken captured the rhythm, volume and emotion of Scotland supporters and translated it into a one-of-a-kind tartan-inspired design.

The kilt serves as a modern tribute to Scotland’s football heritage, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design while honouring the supporters whose voices have become an integral part of the national team’s identity.

Transforming the Tartan Army’s Voice into Fashion

The project comes a year after Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, officially opened Heineken UK’s Edinburgh headquarters. The brewer, which has a significant presence in Scotland and operates hundreds of pubs across the country, wanted to create something that recognised the dedication of Scottish football supporters.

By converting the soundwave of the Tartan Army’s famous chant into a visual pattern, the collaboration creates a tangible representation of fan culture that can be worn and celebrated beyond the stadium.

Heineken Pays Tribute to Scotland’s Supporters

Stephen Rooney, Director at Heineken UK, described the initiative as a celebration of Scottish football fandom and national pride.

According to Rooney, the project was inspired by the energy of the Hampden Roar and the commitment shown by supporters whether they are cheering from the stands, gathering in pubs or watching from home.

He added that the bespoke kilt recognises the chants, loyalty and passion that have defined Scottish football support for generations.

Siobhan Mackenzie Brings Scottish Heritage to the Project

Known for reinventing traditional Scottish dress through contemporary design, Siobhan Mackenzie has built an international reputation for modern kilt craftsmanship. The Highland-born designer launched her label in 2014 and has worked with high-profile brands and organisations while championing Scottish manufacturing and heritage.

Speaking about the collaboration, Mackenzie said the project brought together two important aspects of Scottish culture – textile heritage and football fandom.

She described the opportunity to transform the roar of Scotland supporters into a wearable piece of art as a meaningful way to celebrate the communities that make football special.

Tartan Army Welcomes the Tribute

Martin Riddell, Chair of the Edinburgh Tartan Army, praised the project for capturing the unique spirit of Scotland’s travelling supporters.

He said seeing the passion and volume of fans transformed into a physical design was a fitting tribute to those who travel across the world to back the national team and highlighted the strong bond that unites Scotland supporters across generations.

How Fans Can Win Their Own Bespoke Soundwave Kilt

Football fans hoping to own a unique version of the ‘Fabric of the Nation’ kilt can enter a competition through Heineken UK’s Instagram campaign.

Supporters simply need to visit Heineken UK on Instagram and comment on the #FabricOfTheNation post, sharing who they would enjoy a matchday beer with.

The winner will then have the chance to submit their own football chant, which will be transformed into a personalised soundwave design and crafted into a one-of-one kilt by Heineken and Siobhan Mackenzie.

Scottish Football Passion Meets Contemporary Design

The ‘Fabric of the Nation’ project is a striking example of how football culture continues to inspire creativity beyond the pitch. By turning the voices of Scotland supporters into wearable art, Heineken and Siobhan Mackenzie have created a lasting tribute to the fans whose passion has become one of the defining features of Scottish football.
