O2 UNVEILS 5G-POWERED CHILDREN’S BOOK TO KEEP BEDTIME STORIES ALIVE FOR BUSY PARENTS

O2 has unveiled a heartwarming innovation that brings families closer together — even when they’re apart. The telecoms giant has launched the Connected Bedtime Story, a first-of-its-kind 5G-powered children’s book designed to help parents share bedtime stories with their kids, wherever they are.

According to new research from O2, 80% of UK parents cherish bedtime stories as their most meaningful bonding moment with their children. More than half (55%) say it’s what they miss most when away from home, while two-thirds (66%) admit to feeling an emotional void when they can’t take part in that nightly ritual.

However, modern life is getting in the way — nearly half (45%) of parents cite work and household responsibilities as key barriers to keeping up with the tradition. That’s where O2’s latest creation steps in.

A Bedtime Story Reinvented

The Connected Bedtime Story blends traditional storytelling with cutting-edge 5G technology, delivering an intimate, interactive experience for families separated by distance. The book, titled Look Up Little Bear: I’m Here Too, was written by parenting author and counsellor Tanith Carey and illustrated by Laura Page.

The story follows Little Bear and Big Bear, a tender exploration of the bond between parent and child, symbolised through stars and the moon. When opened, children see beautiful printed illustrations — and, uniquely, their parent’s live face appears within the pages via a hidden paper-like screen.

Thanks to O2’s low-latency 5G network, the two-way camera allows parents and children to see and hear each other in real time, reading and reacting together as though they were side by side. Subtle animations bring the book’s world to life, enhancing the sense of togetherness.

Catherine Tyldesley Puts It to the Test

Actor Catherine Tyldesley — best known for Coronation Street — was the first to experience the Connected Bedtime Story. Balancing a busy filming schedule and family life, Catherine said the innovation brought her closer to her children despite her demanding routine.

“As a mum who often travels for work, it can be heartbreaking to miss bedtime reading with my children,” said Tyldesley. “Seeing technology used in this way to make that special moment still possible is just amazing. Watching Iris’ face light up when I appeared in the story was something I’ll never forget.”

Strengthening the Parent-Child Bond

Author Tanith Carey emphasised the emotional importance of reading together:

“The bedtime story is a sacred ritual. It’s not just about the story — it’s about giving your child undivided attention. This book uses technology in a magical way to make sure distance doesn’t break that bond.”

Dr Robert Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at O2, added:

“Connectivity has the power to bring people together, and this is a clear example of that purpose in action. By harnessing O2’s award-winning 5G network, we’re helping parents and children enjoy bedtime reading together, no matter where they are.”

O2’s Ongoing Commitment to Connection

The Connected Bedtime Story is the latest in a series of initiatives from O2 that showcase how technology can foster human connection. Whether through innovative campaigns or investments in digital inclusion, O2 continues to prove that connectivity isn’t just about speed — it’s about keeping people close.
