An internationally acclaimed immersive light and sound experience is coming to the UK for the very first time — and it’s landing in the heart of Manchester. LUMINISCENCE, the breathtaking fusion of 360° video mapping, orchestral music and storytelling, will make its highly anticipated British debut at Manchester Cathedral in January 2026.
Having already mesmerised more than one million spectators worldwide and illuminated over twenty historic landmarks across Europe and the USA, LUMINISCENCE transforms iconic architecture into a living, breathing canvas. Now, audiences in the North West will be invited to step inside one of the city’s most treasured buildings for a spellbinding 45-minute, three-dimensional musical journey.
A Love Letter to Manchester’s Music, People and Creativity
Created especially for its UK premiere, the Manchester edition of LUMINISCENCE celebrates the city’s rich cultural heritage, musical legacy and enduring spirit. A brand-new script has been written by BAFTA Award-winning writer Tim Whitnall, with narration provided by one of Manchester’s most legendary voices, Christopher Eccleston — best known for Doctor Who and Our Friends in the North.
The immersive score features orchestral reimaginings of iconic Manchester anthems, performed with a powerful choral layer by the acclaimed Collectives Gospel Choir. Expect music by Oasis, The Verve, Joy Division and Elbow, seamlessly woven into an emotive narrative that honours the city’s global influence on music and culture.
When Light Becomes the Storyteller
Inside Manchester Cathedral, a battalion of high-power projectors transforms centuries-old stonework into a glowing, animated masterpiece. Every statue, carving, pillar and stained-glass window is brought to life through precision 3D video mapping, revealing breathtaking visual tableaux that highlight the cathedral’s architectural beauty.
Six months before opening night, LUMINISCENCE’s technical team meticulously 3D maps and models every inch of the interior, ensuring that light, sound and space work in perfect harmony. Layers of voices, strings, brass and woodwind resonate through the cathedral, immersing audiences in a multisensory tribute to Manchester’s past, present and future.
