Hans Zimmer’s Interstellar Score Will Be Performed Live

At the heart of Interstellar Live is the film’s extraordinary score by Hans Zimmer, which has become one of the most recognisable pieces of contemporary film music.

The 65-piece Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra will perform the score live as the movie unfolds on screen, recreating Zimmer’s sweeping orchestral arrangements on an arena-sized scale.

The performance will feature strings, woodwind, brass, harp, two pianos, keyboards and an extensive percussion section, including bass marimba, large bass drum and timpani.

The orchestra will be conducted by Matt Dunkley, a respected conductor and collaborator of Zimmer.

The Original Interstellar Organist Will Perform

One of the biggest attractions for fans of Zimmer’s score will be the involvement of Roger Sayer, the organist who performed the organ parts on the original Interstellar soundtrack.

Sayer was personally selected by Zimmer during the creation of the 2014 score and recorded the iconic organ passages at London’s Temple Church. His distinctive contribution became an integral part of the film’s sound.

He will now return to perform the music live alongside the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra.

A Decade Later, Interstellar Remains a Sci-Fi Favourite

Released in 2014, Interstellar follows former NASA pilot Cooper, played by Matthew McConaughey, as humanity faces an increasingly uncertain future on Earth.

With the planet becoming increasingly hostile to human life, Cooper joins a mission travelling through a wormhole in search of a potential new home for humanity.

The film stars Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Sir Michael Caine and Casey Affleck alongside McConaughey, combining Nolan’s ambitious science-fiction storytelling with Zimmer’s emotionally charged score.

Interstellar received five Academy Award nominations, ultimately winning the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, while Zimmer’s score received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score.

The soundtrack has continued to attract huge audiences long after the film’s original release. In fact, Interstellar previously featured among the world’s most-streamed film soundtracks, highlighting the enduring popularity of Zimmer’s work.

Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra to Bring the Film to Life

The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra has considerable experience performing major movie scores live alongside screenings.

Its previous film-in-concert productions have included titles such as Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar, Skyfall, Gladiator, Back to the Future and Home Alone.

That experience will now be brought to Nolan’s space epic, creating an immersive combination of cinema and live orchestral performance.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has also previously presented Interstellar Live at London’s Royal Albert Hall, with Roger Sayer performing Zimmer’s organ score.
