To celebrate National Meatball Day on 9 March, Swedish furniture giant IKEA is taking its iconic meatballs off the plate and into a brand-new handheld snack: the Meatball Sub.
Available nationwide across participating UK stores from 9 March until 30 April 2026, the new sandwich is priced from just 95p for IKEA Family members, offering fans an affordable way to enjoy one of the brand’s most recognisable menu items.
A New Twist on IKEA’s Iconic Meatballs
For more than four decades, IKEA meatballs have been a core part of the in-store experience, with over 1.4 billion sold globally each year. Now the beloved dish has been reimagined into a convenient sub-style snack designed for customers on the go.
The Meatball Sub features IKEA’s signature meatballs served in a soft bread bun, layered with tangy pickled gherkins and finished with a generous drizzle of lingonberry jam—a staple of Swedish cuisine that delivers the classic sweet-and-savoury flavour combination associated with traditional Swedish meatballs.
The result is a bold, portable take on the classic dish that blends Scandinavian flavours with a format familiar to British shoppers.
Scandinavian Flavours Meet a British Favourite
Lingonberry jam has long accompanied Swedish meatballs, adding a sharp sweetness that balances the richness of the dish. In the new Meatball Sub, the jam is paired with crunchy gherkins, bringing a tangy contrast that taps into the growing popularity of bold, pickled flavours—especially among Gen Z diners.
The launch also reflects the UK’s enduring love of sandwiches. Britons eat more than 11.5 billion sandwiches every year, and online interest continues to grow. Over the past year, searches for “sandwiches” have risen by 10%, while interest in terms such as “meatball marinara,” “Swedish meatballs,” and “IKEA food” has surged significantly.
With high-street lunch prices continuing to rise, the new sub is positioned as an affordable alternative to pricier grab-and-go options.
A Budget-Friendly Lunch Option
Karen Hughes, Food Manager at IKEA UK and Ireland, said the new menu item celebrates both the brand’s heritage and its commitment to value.
“We know how much our customers love our meatballs, and after celebrating their 40th birthday in December, we could think of no better way to reinvent them for the modern palate this National Meatball Day,” Hughes said.
“By bringing together bold Swedish flavours—savoury meatballs, lingonberry and gherkins—in a sub, we’re making it even easier to enjoy a taste of Sweden on the go, at a price tag that stays true to IKEA.”
Where to Get the IKEA Meatball Sub
The Meatball Sub is available now across participating UK stores via the Swedish Deli, Swedish Bistro and Swedish Bite, with the exception of the Aberdeen location.
