ICE CREAM IN A YORKSHIRE PUDDING? THE ‘SUNDAE ROAST’ IS THE VIRAL SUMMER FOOD TREND TAKING OVER YORKSHIRE

Move over waffle cones – there’s a new way to enjoy ice cream this summer, and it’s about as British as it gets.

A family-run ice cream business in Yorkshire has gone viral after serving scoops of ice cream inside an Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire Pudding, creating an unusual dessert dubbed the “Sundae Roast”. The quirky creation has already attracted curious food lovers, with many calling it one of the most unexpected food trends of the summer.

If you’re a fan of bizarre food combinations, this could be your next must-try dessert.

Yorkshire’s Newest Dessert Craze Combines Ice Cream and Yorkshire Puddings

The innovative dessert comes from Yorkshire Dales Ice Cream in Skipton, where the limited-edition summer special replaces the traditional cone with a crispy Yorkshire pudding.

Rather than letting melted ice cream drip everywhere, the pudding acts as an edible bowl, soaking up every last drop while adding a subtle savoury twist to the sweet treat.

According to owner Scott Rogers, the idea was to celebrate one of Yorkshire’s most iconic foods in an entirely different way.

“The Yorkshire Pudding is one of our county’s most famous exports, but there are so many more ways for people to enjoy them beyond a Sunday roast.

“It’s definitely got a few raised eyebrows from the traditionalists, but most people are quickly converted. It’s a bit of fun, it’s proudly Yorkshire, and judging by the reactions so far, it may just be here to stay.”

The Sundae Roast is available as a special menu item until 31 July, giving visitors to Skipton a limited window to try the unusual combination.

Inspired by Aunt Bessie’s and London’s Ice Cream Project

The idea follows Aunt Bessie’s recent collaboration with Anya Hindmarch’s Ice Cream Project, which featured a vanilla and golden syrup ice cream containing chunks of Yorkshire puddings as part of the London pop-up earlier this summer.

It’s another example of Britain’s growing appetite for reinventing the classic Yorkshire pudding beyond the traditional Sunday roast, following recent viral food mash-ups including the so-called “British burrito.”

How to Make the Sundae Roast at Home

If you can’t make it to Yorkshire, recreating the dessert at home is surprisingly simple.

You’ll need:

  • Frozen Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire Puddings
  • Your favourite ice cream
  • Any toppings you’d like
  • An air fryer

Method

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 200°C for 3–4 minutes.
  2. Cook the frozen Yorkshire puddings for 2–3 minutes until golden and crisp.
  3. Leave them to cool for around 15 minutes.
  4. Add one or two scoops of ice cream.
  5. Finish with your favourite sauces or toppings and enjoy.

Because the puddings have a neutral flavour, they work with everything from vanilla and chocolate to salted caramel, strawberries or even pistachio.
