GREENWICH+DOCKLANDS INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 2026 UNVEILS FIRST WAVE OF FREE OUTDOOR THEATRE, DANCE AND ART ACROSS LONDON!

London’s biggest free outdoor performing arts festival returns with world premieres, international productions and spectacular public events across Greenwich, Newham, Thamesmead and East London.

The acclaimed Greenwich+Docklands International Festival 2026 (GDIF) has announced the first wave of its 2026 programme, bringing an ambitious line-up of free outdoor theatre, dance, circus and immersive art installations to London from 21 August to 6 September 2026.

Following the success of its landmark 30th anniversary celebrations in 2025, the festival returns with a theme of “We Move”, showcasing more than 25 companies from the UK and around the world. Audiences can expect three world premieres, five UK premieres and ten London premieres across venues in Greenwich, Woolwich, Thamesmead, Stratford and beyond.

GDIF 2026 Celebrates Resilience, Community and Creativity

Artistic Director Bradley Hemmings says this year’s theme reflects London’s enduring spirit of resilience and mutual support.

The festival’s “We Move” ethos draws inspiration from the phrase commonly used by young Londoners to express determination and optimism despite challenges. Through free access to world-class performances, GDIF aims to bring communities together through shared cultural experiences.

Opening Event: 360 Transforms Woolwich Into a Giant Dance Arena

The festival opens on 21 August with the world premiere of 360, an immersive large-scale dance production created by acclaimed French choreographer Mehdi Kerkouche.

Set in General Gordon Square, the performance will transform Woolwich town centre into a circular dance arena where electronic music, innovative staging and contemporary choreography combine in an energetic celebration of movement and change.

UK Premiere of Argentine Spectacle Efectos Especiales

One of the standout international productions arriving in London is Efectos Especiales (Special Effects), making its UK debut at Greenwich Peninsula on 29 and 30 August.

Created by Argentine filmmaker Alejo Moguillansky and choreographer Luciana Acuña, the immersive experience blurs the line between cinema and live performance.

Audiences will step inside a functioning film set where dancers, special effects and dramatic weather elements combine to create an unfolding cinematic spectacle in real time.

Nature Speaks: Thamesmead’s Hidden Landscapes Become Living Art

GDIF heads to Thamesmead on 4 and 5 September with Nature Speaks, a thought-provoking double bill of immersive installations exploring humanity’s relationship with the natural world.

The programme includes I Have No Name, from Catalonian collective El Conde de Torrefiel, alongside Canopy, a sonic installation by artist Lorna Rees featuring suspended seed pods inspired by local trees and ecosystems.

Romford’s Historic Liberty Fountain Returns to Life

Another major highlight sees Romford Market become the setting for Meet Me By The Fountain, an ambitious outdoor son-et-lumière production on 28 and 29 August.

Created by David Shearing with text by Vickie Donoghue, sound by James Bulley and projections from Novak, the performance reimagines memories of Romford’s iconic Liberty Fountain through storytelling, sound and large-scale visual projection.

New London Premieres Explore Identity, Family and Masculinity

Several new commissions will receive their London premieres during the festival.

The Aunties: The House of Masks

Created by Oluwatosin Omotosho, this vibrant dance-theatre production celebrates the influence of West African aunties while exploring cultural identity, resilience and family dynamics through Hip Hop and Afro Dance.

The Torch

Written and created by Kobby Taylor, grandson of legendary Ghanaian musician Ebo Taylor, this Afrobeat-infused gig theatre experience combines live storytelling, DJ sets and performance to examine legacy and generational change.

CHAIR!

Presented by the Geraldine Pilgrim Performance Company in Newham, CHAIR! is an interactive visual theatre experience celebrating public space, accessibility and community participation.

Greenwich Fair Returns to Greenwich Park

GDIF’s much-loved family-focused event, Greenwich Fair, returns to the historic Grand Ascent in Greenwich Park on 22 and 23 August.

The free programme includes circus, dance, theatre and interactive games suitable for all ages, all set against one of London’s most iconic skyline views.

Highlights include:

  • Inertie, featuring an innovative revolving circus structure.
  • A Place Between Mass and Echoes, from Guinness World Record-holding circus artist Symoné.
  • Do Birds Dream Of Flying?, created by Slovenian company Fabla Collective.

Dancing City Takes Over Stratford and East Bank

On 5 September, GDIF’s popular Dancing City programme returns with a day dedicated entirely to outdoor dance performances across Stratford, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and East Bank.

Featured performances include:

  • Benched by Danish company Uppercut Dance Theater, presented in partnership with Sadler’s Wells.
  • Man Down, a powerful new work by Deaf choreographer Chris Fonseca that examines masculinity through hip hop, visual vernacular and live music.

Community Finale Brings GDIF 2026 to a Close

The festival concludes on 6 September with (In)Visible Dancing, a large-scale participatory performance created by Woolwich-based dance company Protein under the direction of Luca Silvestrini.

Co-created with local community dance groups, the finale promises a joyful celebration of collective movement, connection and creativity, bringing thousands together for a fitting close to another landmark edition of GDIF.
