GREENPEACE UK UNVEILS LIMITED-EDITION ‘PROTEST COFFIN’ SO BABY BOOMERS CAN KEEP FIGHTING FOR THE PLANET—EVEN AFTER DEATH

Greenpeace UK has taken climate activism to a whole new level—six feet under, to be exact. The environmental organisation has revealed a limited-edition coffin designed to let baby boomers continue campaigning for the planet long after their time on Earth has technically ended.

Unveiled in central London, the casket features a six-foot telescopic protest arm, engineered to rise just above ground level. Complete with interchangeable protest signs and a custom Sleeve Selector™ offering denim, tartan, and floral styles, this radical piece of “afterlife activism tech” lets its occupant keep making noise for the environment—literally from beyond the grave.

You can watch the coffin’s London debut — which travelled by hearse past Parliament Square and several Shell petrol stations — in the official footage provided by Greenpeace here.

Why Greenpeace Is Targeting Baby Boomers

According to new research from Greenpeace UK, people aged 55+ remain deeply concerned about the environmental crisis.

Key findings include:

  • 62% of baby boomers worry about the planet being left to future generations

  • 59% believe the Earth will be in worse condition at the end of their lives than at their birth

  • 65% say it’s important to continue fighting for the planet “after they are gone”

  • Almost half (48%) are considering leaving a charitable gift in their will

Despite stereotypes that older generations have lost their activist spark, the data suggests the opposite. Many boomers want to make a meaningful impact—both now and beyond their lifetime.

John Hutchin, Greenpeace UK’s Head of Legacies, explained:

“Baby boomers appreciate that they have had it good and that it’s time to give something back. This coffin is a brilliant way to keep protesting well into the afterlife, but that generation can have a far greater impact by leaving a legacy gift to Greenpeace and ensuring the fight for our environment continues for future generations.”

Couple Valli (70) and Pip (69) Lawrence, who have already included Greenpeace in their wills, echoed this sentiment, saying that leaving a gift helps “compensate for what our generation… have taken out and destroyed in the environment.”

A Coffin With a Message — and a Mission

While the “protest coffin” is satirical in tone, its message is serious. Greenpeace created it to challenge the idea that activism is only for the young — and to show that older generations still hold enormous power in the climate movement.

The organisation hopes the stunt will inspire conversations around legacy giving, a long-term method of supporting environmental action that can fund future campaigns against fossil fuels, deforestation, and climate injustice.
