This International Women’s Day is a great opportunity to celebrate influential women in the drinks industry. Two women who deserve to be celebrated are the co-founders of Mijenta Tequila, the sustainable designer and environmental consultant, Elise Som and Maestra Tequilera, Ana Maria Romero.
About the Founders
Elise Som is a sustainable designer and environmental consultant who pursued her Master’s in sustainability from Harvard University and Parsons, the New School of Design. Elise strongly believes that Mother Nature is the best designer, and this has helped guide the creation of Mijenta from the recycled agave waste bottle label to the sustainably produced liquid. Elise considers that sustainability and transparency are the new normal for modern consumers and says, “true luxury is to design with a responsible heart.”
Ana Maria Romero is one of the first Official Catadores of Tequila and is widely regarded as one of the most trusted, respected, and awarded tequila authorities in Mexico. Ana Maria is on the advisory board of institutions such as the Tequila Regulatory Council and the National Chamber of the Tequila Industry. As a Maestra Tequilera for Mijenta Tequila, Ana Maria oversees the entire tequila process from start to finish, and throughout her work, she is strongly committed to minimizing environmental impact and promoting biodiversity.
More about Mijenta Tequila and Two Keys
Mijenta Tequila is an artisanal small-batch Tequila from the highlands of Jalisco, made with 100% Agave and the best possible materials, embracing traditional methods resulting in a complex tequila with a silky long finish. This unique super-premium spirit, distilled by Maestra Tequilera Ana Maria Romero, is carefully crafted with a commitment to environmental sustainability and support for the local community. All paper elements are made of agave waste by an organization of single mothers in Mexico and Mijenta was the first tequila brand to do this. Mijenta also joined forces with Whales of Guerrero in 2021 to boost community-driven conservation in the region.
Two Keys believe that only “two key” ingredients are needed to make the perfect drink; a spirit of your choice, and one of their mixers. Two Keys mixers are low calorie, 100% natural, and made using real fruit juice, never from concentrate. The raw ingredients have been painstakingly sourced and blended to allow drinkers to create a perfectly balanced, premium drink in seconds. Two Keys is also sustainable in how they pledge to donate 5% of all sales to Tusk, an organization that finds sustainable solutions to preserve critical habitats, protect endangered species, combat the illegal wildlife trade, empower local communities, and promote environmental education.
