BLACK MOTION AND PRINCE KAYBEE TRANSFORM KARMACODA’S ‘TIME’ INTO A GLOBAL AFRO HOUSE ANTHEM

Afro House heavyweights Black Motion and Prince Kaybee have joined forces—indirectly but powerfully—to deliver two standout remixes of Karmacoda’s emotive single Time. Released via Sola Musa Music, the reworks breathe new life into the San Francisco duo’s original track, fusing introspective lyricism with pulsating, dancefloor-ready energy.

Prince Kaybee’s remix dropped on 13 February, followed by Black Motion’s version on 6 March—both earning international acclaim. Tastemaker platform YourEDM and publications such as Music In Africa, SlikourOnLife, and Vicious Magazine have all spotlighted the releases, cementing their global impact.

A Meeting of Afro House Excellence

Prince Kaybee, a platinum-selling producer, DJ, and television personality, continues to solidify his status as one of South Africa’s most influential electronic artists. With multiple South African Music Awards (SAMAs) under his belt—including Male Artist of the Year and Album of the Year—his catalogue reflects both commercial success and artistic depth.

Having collaborated with artists like Shimza, Busiswa, and Ami Faku, Prince Kaybee’s sonic identity is rooted in rich Afro House textures and melodic storytelling. His track Uwrongo even earned recognition from TIME Magazine as one of the “10 Best Songs of 2020.”

Meanwhile, Black Motion—comprised of Thabo Mabogwane and Kabelo “Problem Child Ten83” Koma—bring their signature percussive intensity to the table. Since forming in 2010, the duo have become synonymous with immersive Afro House soundscapes, earning accolades including SAMA wins for Best Duo/Group and Best Dance Album.

Their global footprint includes releases on Defected Records and a celebrated performance on NPR Tiny Desk, showcasing their ability to bridge underground credibility with mainstream appeal.

Reimagining ‘Time’

Originally featured on Karmacoda’s 2022 album Lessons In Time, Time is a deeply reflective track exploring themes of regret and introspection. With vocals from Jessica Ford, production by Brett Crockett, and instrumentation from Eric Matsuno, the original leans into a dreamy blend of electronica, R&B, and jazz-infused textures.

Both remixes elevate the track into Afro House territory while preserving its emotional core.

Prince Kaybee’s version introduces a powerful bassline that anchors the track, complemented by shimmering piano arpeggios that evoke a spectrum of emotions—from melancholy to quiet joy. His approach is as much visual as it is sonic:

“When I make music I see color… the vocals on the original remind me of blue… a subtle fresh breeze. Before I did the remix I needed to find its color—that’s how it started.”

Black Motion, on the other hand, infuse the track with their trademark rhythmic complexity. Their remix builds around hypnotic percussion and layered atmospherics, transforming Time into a spiritual, almost ritualistic experience.

“The ‘Time’ remix was born from a conversation with the ancestors… where rhythm becomes memory and melody becomes prayer.”

Karmacoda’s Genre-Defying Legacy

Karmacoda’s two-decade career has seen them blur the lines between electronica, trip-hop, R&B, and dream pop. Known for their lush, jazz-lounge influences and soulful vocals, the duo have attracted remixers including Krono, Extrawelt, and Oliver Schories.

With these latest reinterpretations, their music finds new resonance within the Afro House scene—appealing to fans of artists like Black Coffee, Zakes Bantwini, and Sun-El Musician.
