Supermarket trips could soon get a major upgrade, as Asda unveils plans for adult-sized trolley seats—designed to keep distracted shopping companions in one place and make the weekly shop far less stressful.
The innovative concept introduces a built-in armchair within standard shopping trolleys, giving fully grown partners, teens, and “unhelpful helpers” a comfortable spot to sit while the main shopper navigates the aisles. Complete with a cup holder and a phone stand for hands-free scrolling, the design blends practicality with a touch of humour—tackling a familiar supermarket struggle head-on.
A Solution to a Very Real Shopping Problem
Asda’s new concept is rooted in research that highlights just how chaotic co-shopping can be. According to the retailer, 73% of shoppers say their companion mysteriously disappears mid-shop, often leading to wasted time searching the aisles before checkout.
The data reveals some relatable culprits behind these vanishing acts:
- 46% say it happens when someone suddenly remembers an item from earlier aisles
- 28% blame distractions like the snack section
- 55% admit one person ends up carrying the entire “mental load” of the shop
From remembering the shopping list to navigating store layouts, it’s clear that for many households, supermarket trips are less of a team effort and more of a solo mission.

Clashing Shopping Styles Cause Aisle Tension
The research also sheds light on the clash of shopping personalities. While 23% of shoppers prefer a strict, list-first approach—moving methodically from aisle to aisle—18% opt for a more spontaneous “browse and buy” style.
This mismatch often leads to friction, confusion, and unexpected detours. In fact, nearly one in five shoppers (19%) admit they only tag along to make sure their personal essentials actually make it into the trolley.
It’s these everyday tensions that inspired Asda’s new trolley concept—creating a designated space for companions while giving the main shopper full control.
Designed for Convenience (and a Bit of Peace)
An Asda spokesperson explained that the idea came directly from customer feedback, with many sharing stories of chaotic shopping trips and differing habits.
The adult-sized trolley seat is intended to:
- Keep co-shoppers safely in one place
- Reduce distractions and delays
- Allow the primary shopper to move efficiently
While the concept leans into humour, it also addresses a genuine need for smoother, more organised shopping experiences.
When Will the Trolleys Launch?
The trolley seats are currently in development, with a nationwide rollout across Asda stores planned for December 2026—just in time for the busy Christmas shopping season.
If successful, the idea could redefine how Brits approach supermarket trips, turning a weekly chore into a more streamlined (and potentially less stressful) experience.
