AMAZON’S TOMB RAIDER SERIES BEGINS PRODUCTION WITH FIRST LOOK AT SOPHIE TURNER AS LARA CROFT

Amazon MGM Studios has officially kicked off production on its highly anticipated Tomb Raider television series for Prime Video, unveiling a first-look image of Sophie Turner in the iconic role of Lara Croft.

The new Prime Video series is based on the legendary Tomb Raider video game franchise, one of the most influential action-adventure series of all time. The story follows world-renowned archaeologist and fearless explorer Lara Croft as she uncovers ancient secrets, survives deadly environments and confronts global threats — a character that has remained a pop-culture staple for nearly three decades.

Sophie Turner Steps Into an Iconic Role

Turner, best known for her roles in Game of Thrones and X-Men, leads the cast as Lara Croft, marking a major reinvention of the character for a new generation. The first-look image signals Amazon’s commitment to a bold, cinematic take on the franchise as it expands its original scripted slate on Prime Video.

She is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge Leads the Creative Team

The series is spearheaded by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the award-winning creator of Fleabag, who serves as creator, writer, executive producer and co-showrunner. She is joined by Chad Hodge as co-showrunner and executive producer, while Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun) will direct episodes and also executive produce.

Waller-Bridge’s involvement has generated significant buzz, particularly given her proven ability to blend sharp character work with high-stakes storytelling — a promising combination for Lara Croft’s next on-screen evolution.

A Major Collaboration Between Gaming and Television

The Tomb Raider series is executive produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Crystal Dynamics — the studio behind the modern Tomb Raider games — and Legendary Television. Additional executive producers include Jenny Robins through Wells Street Films and Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Dallas Dickinson through Story Kitchen, a company known for translating video game properties to screen.

Production duties are handled by Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics, and Amazon MGM Studios, with Matt McInnis and Jan R. Martin serving as co-executive producers.

Tomb Raider’s Expanding Screen Legacy

Originally debuting in 1996, Tomb Raider has sold millions of copies worldwide and previously spawned blockbuster films starring Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. Amazon’s series marks the franchise’s most ambitious television adaptation yet, aligning with the platform’s broader push into premium genre storytelling.

The Tomb Raider series will stream exclusively on Prime Video. For more on the franchise’s history, visit the official Tomb Raider website.
