AIRBNB AND STRAVA LAUNCH THE ULTIMATE AUTUMN “RUN-CATION” TREND FOR GEN Z TRAVELLERS

This autumn, Airbnb and Strava are joining forces to inspire the next big travel trend among young Brits — the rural run-cation. Think: scenic trails, countryside air, and post-run pastries with friends.

According to new research from Airbnb and Strava, nearly three-quarters (74%) of young runners have either planned or are considering a countryside running holiday. The study highlights a shift from city routes to open trails, as Gen Z runners seek more meaningful, nature-filled escapes.

The Rise of the Rural “Run-cation”

For many, this movement reflects more than fitness — it’s about mindfulness, connection, and swapping urban chaos for open skies. Strava reports that a third of all its athletes are Gen Z, with participation growing 30% over the past 18 months.

Yet, despite the enthusiasm, 64% of young runners admit they don’t know where to start when planning countryside routes. That’s where Airbnb and Strava come in — revealing a curated selection of UK rural stays near popular Strava-verified trails.

“We’re making it simpler than ever to experience the best of the UK’s countryside,” said Luke Impett, Partnerships and External Affairs Lead for Airbnb Northern Europe. “Airbnb is uniquely placed to offer group stays where travellers can recharge post-run — and what better way to finish than with a local pastry?”

Post-Run Rewards — On the House

To make things even sweeter, Airbnb and Strava have teamed up with five local bakeries across the UK to offer complimentary sweet treats to runners.

Here’s how it works:

  • Complete any run-related activity on the Strava app, or stay at an Airbnb in one of the five destinations below.

  • Show proof on your phone via the Strava or Airbnb app.

  • Claim your free pastry between 16 October and 16 December 2025.
