Afro Nation Portugal, the world’s biggest Afrobeats festival, returns to The Algarve’s sun-kissed coast on 26th – 28th June 2024. Today, Afro Nation Portugal announces the first 20 names for the highly anticipated event, including the likes of Rema, Asake, J Hus, Tyla on the main stage as well as Amapiano favourites Major League DJz, Uncle Waffles, Focalistic and many more. The world renowned festival, which more than doubled in size over the first three editions, promises another epic year of immaculate vibes and countless unforgettable moments.
Among an unbelievable lineup of talent are some of the very hottest names in Afrobeats right now, and leading the charge is none other than last year’s breakout star, Asake. His performance at Afro Nation Portugal 2023 was the most talked about show all year, and saw the fast-rising artist going on to sell out 20,000 tickets at the O2 Arena within just two years of launching his career. Mr Money With The Vibe’s new album ‘Work of Art’ lives up to its name in every sense. Get ready to experience the vibe firsthand at Afro Nation, where Asake is primed to set the stage ablaze once more with his electrifying presence.
One artist that fans have longed to see back on the beach in Portugal is Nigerian sensation Rema. Busy sending shockwaves around the world, Rema recently left everyone spellbound at the Ballon D’Or awards, all while riding the wave of ‘Calm Down’—now hailed as the longest-charting and most triumphant African anthem to grace the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Rema clinched Best Afrobeats at the 2023 MTV EMA Awards, cementing his status as one of the greats, and now adds headlining The O2 London to the growing list of accolades just this week.
British Afroswing artist J Hus is set to make a huge return to Afro Nation this June. Marking his first show for the global festival brand since the 2019 debut in Portugal, The Bouff Daddy dispatches some of the biggest hits of the last decade, from ‘Lean & Bop’ and ‘Did You See’ to his most recent Jorja Smith collaboration ‘Feelings’. Additionally, Ninho, a colossal star in France, achieved remarkable success with his 2022 album ‘JEFE’ becoming the year’s most streamed release. This summer Ninho collaborated with Central Cee, and today, he joins the lineup promising an exhilarating addition to the bill.
An exciting moment signifying Amapiano’s growing evolution into the mainstream, South African artist Tyla jumps over from the Piano People stage to the Main Stage, off the back of latest viral smash hit ‘Water’ which has propelled her into the spotlight and solidified her position as a key player in the Amapiano movement. Elsewhere The Compozers, one of Afrobeats biggest live bands, are confirmed to return next year, just after celebrating their 10 year anniversary show at The Royal Albert Hall, alongside Justin Bieber collaborator Omah Lay, “Nwa Baby” hit-maker Flavour, Tanzanian legend Diamond Platnumz, Nigeria’s hottest Alte act of the moment Odumodublvck and Afro-fusion singer Seyi Vibez.
No Afro Nation party would be complete without its pioneering Piano People stage, welcoming the hottest and most influential acts from the South African Amapiano scene. This time again, Afro Nation Portugal strikes hard with Amapiano superstar duo Major League DJz who have made an indelible mark on the UK already, performing to over ten thousand people at London’s new Drumsheds venue this month. Joining them is the Amapiano sensation, the dragon herself; Uncle Waffles, Amapiano’s own president of the streets ‘President Ya Straata’ Focalistic, and a special moment where “Mnike”-singer Tumelo.za joins Tyler ICU for a set to celebrate the biggest ‘piano anthem of the year.
Also in the mix, we have Young Stunna, who recently lit up the stage at the Piano People Ministry of Sound show. The beat masters Mellow and Steazy, renowned for crafting some of the most impactful beats in the game. Elsewhere today’s announcement welcomes superkid Virgo Deep, Justin99 & Pcee, Kamo Mphela, Kelvin Momo and many more. With all these DJs turning it up, this year’s Piano People party will be one for the books!
Today’s news follows both Asake and Tyla being nominated for Best African Music Performance for the Grammy Awards 2024, alongside several stars of Afro Nation Portugal 2023 like Burna Boy, Davido and Arya Starr all up for more.
