Shot during Afro Nation Portugal 2023, the film delves into the heart of the global phenomena, and answers the questions of what Afrobeats means to the people and why Afrobeats has made such an indelible mark on music, fashion and culture.
Stunning unseen performance clips tell the story of a festival giving birth to a global movement and unifying the diaspora in celebration and enjoyment. These momentous sets from the likes of Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Asake, Ayra Starr, Tyla and many more have paved the way for Afrobeats and Amapiano to dominate on the world’s biggest stages. As told by Ghanaian highlife, reggae, and hip-hop artist Black Sherif and award winning, platinum selling band The Compozers, Camidoh and more, the exploration of Afrobeats goes beyond mere melodies; it delves into the heart of a global phenomenon that has transcended borders. Camidoh said: “This is the greatest potential, Afro Nation is the greatest potential of the world right now“. Through the infectious rhythms and themes of love and positivity, Afrobeats has become a unifying force, fostering a sense of unity and inclusivity among listeners from all backgrounds.
The film also plots the more recent explosion of Amapiano, the African dance music genre bursting out of SA. With its distinctive blend of house music and local South African sounds, Amapiano has held a firm grip over dance floors globally, becoming a symbol of innovation and cultural resurgence. Speaking about the growth of Amapiano around the world and infectious vibes of the groove, are the Grammy nominated Musa Keys, “Dancing Queen” Kamo Mphela and energetic Amapiano riser Skyla Tylaa. The artists give their first hand account of what the Amapiano movement is and why it’s come to be loved by many all around the world, surrounded by scenes from the popular Piano People stage on the beach in Portugal.
‘A Movement’ also features interviews with Afrobeats historian Adesope “Shopsydoo” Olajide, comedian and host of the Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show BBC 1Xtra Eddie Kadi, Afro Nation co-founder SMADE and more. Shopsydoo said, “Afro Nation crosses boundaries, builds bridges and creates a completely different unity“. Adding to that sentiment, Eddie Kadi said, “The heart of it really is the African experience”.
Shining a spotlight on Afro Nation’s mission and its profound impact on Portugal and the world at large, the documentary vividly portrays Afro Nation’s commitment to creating an inclusive space where African music and culture can thrive. As the film unfolds, it becomes evident that Afro Nation is more than just a festival—it’s a movement that supports and uplifts countless communities and individuals.
Afro Nation organisers finish on a note of appreciation to anyone lifting up African music and culture worldwide: “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who plays a part, from our fans and community travelling from around the world, and our phenomenal artists gracing the stage, to the dedicated teams working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the safety, comfort, and enjoyment for all.
