WHY UK PET OWNERS ARE CHOOSING THEIR PETS OVER PARTNERS, FRIENDS AND EVEN WEDDINGS

From skipping dates to trusting their dog’s judgement over their own, new research from Mars Incorporated reveals just how deeply pets are shaping the emotional lives of Brits in 2026.

The study found that nearly half of UK pet owners (48%) would consider ending a relationship if their pet didn’t approve of their partner — highlighting the growing influence pets now have over major life decisions.

With younger generations leading the shift, pets are no longer simply companions. For many, they have become emotional support systems, trusted confidantes and even relationship advisors.

Gen Z Is Redefining Pet Parenthood

The research shows that Gen Z pet owners are especially emotionally connected to their animals. More than a quarter (27%) regularly talk to their pets about their love life, while 18% admit they’ve prioritised time with their pet over going on dates.

Even more telling, over a third (35%) of Gen Z respondents said they trust their pet’s judgement of other people more than their own instincts.

According to Waltham Petcare Science Institute animal behaviour scientist Dr Tammie King, there may be some truth behind that trust.

“Pets can be surprisingly good judges of character. Paying attention to their behaviour and body language can tell owners a lot about what makes their pet feel comfortable, safe and at ease.”

The findings reflect a wider cultural shift where pets are increasingly viewed as family members rather than simply animals living in the home.

Brits Are Cancelling Plans to Spend Time With Their Pets

The emotional attachment goes far beyond relationships. The study found that more than half of pet owners (52%) cancel social plans at least once a week to spend more time with their pets.

Meanwhile:

  • 14% would skip a friend’s birthday
  • 11% would miss a major sporting event
  • 8% would even skip a wedding

For many owners, the motivation is simple — 45% said they feel happier knowing their pet is not left alone.

The research also revealed some relatable everyday confessions:

  • 53% willingly give up their spot on the sofa for their pet
  • 31% regularly gossip or share secrets with their pet
  • 25% consider their pet their favourite member of the household

Pets Are Becoming Essential for Mental Wellbeing

The findings build on previous research from a 2025 collaboration between Mars and mental health charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), which found that 83% of owners believe their pet positively impacts their mental wellbeing.

The emotional comfort pets provide is becoming increasingly important in modern life:

  • 84% find their pet’s presence calming
  • 56% say their pet provides quiet comfort during stressful moments
  • 58% would rather spend time with their pet when stressed than with their partner or family

As conversations around mental health continue to grow, the human-animal bond is becoming a major part of how people manage stress, loneliness and emotional wellbeing.

Wild Pet Confessions Shared at Goodwoof Festival

The research was brought to life at Goodwoof, the annual UK dog festival celebrating pet culture and wellbeing.

Festivalgoers shared hilarious and heartfelt confessions, including:

  • Turning down a dream job because the office wasn’t dog-friendly
  • Travelling to Paris for their dog’s birthday
  • Getting tattoos dedicated to their pets

The event also celebrated the “Year of the Rescue”, with Mars donating £5 to Battersea for every confession shared during the festival.

Mars and Battersea have partnered for 18 years to support animal welfare initiatives across the UK and internationally.

Mars Continues Supporting Modern Pet Parenthood

Nick Foster, General Manager of Mars Pet Nutrition North Europe, said the findings demonstrate how central pets have become in modern households.

“We’ve always known that people love their pets, but this research shows they are now central to our lives in ways we’ve never seen before. They’re our confidantes, our support systems, and, it seems, our most trusted relationship advisors.”

Mars has increasingly focused on supporting pet-friendly lifestyles, including work around the UK’s evolving rental laws. In partnership with Battersea, the company helped develop guidance for renters and landlords through its Renting With Pets Guide alongside discussions surrounding the Renters’ Rights Act.

From brands like PEDIGREE and WHISKAS to scientific research through the Waltham Petcare Science Institute, Mars continues to invest heavily in strengthening the relationship between pets and owners worldwide.
