UK COMMUNITIES CRAVE CONNECTION AS B&Q FOUNDATION LAUNCHES NATIONWIDE “BB&Q” CHARITY BBQ EVENTS!

Communities across the UK are sitting on a huge amount of untapped potential for connection, according to new research commissioned by home improvement retailer B&Q on behalf of the B&Q Foundation revealing a strong desire for closer local relationships and more opportunities to come together.

The findings highlight a clear paradox: while people value where they live, many feel increasingly disconnected from those around them.

Nearly Half of Brits Feel Disconnected from Their Neighbours

The research shows that 42% of UK adults don’t currently feel connected to their local community, while one in five (19%) say they only have meaningful conversations with neighbours less than once a month.

Everyday neighbourly interactions — a quick hello on the doorstep or a passing chat — are becoming increasingly rare, replaced by fleeting contact rather than real connection.

However, there are regional standouts. In Scotland, over three quarters (76%) of people say they speak to their neighbours daily, showing that stronger community bonds are still very much possible.

A Strong Desire for Local Connection Still Exists

Despite growing disconnection, the appetite for community remains strong.

The research found that:

  • 67% of people believe sharing food is one of the easiest ways to bring people together
  • This rises to 78% among 25–34-year-olds
  • 60% would be more likely to attend a local event if it supported a charitable cause

These insights point to simple, shared experiences — particularly food-led gatherings — as a powerful way to rebuild local relationships.

Introducing BB&Q: A Nationwide Community BBQ Initiative

To turn this appetite into action, the B&Q Foundation is launching its first-ever BB&Q events over the weekend of 12–14 June, with selected stores across the UK taking part.

For one weekend only, five B&Q stores will host community BBQs designed to bring people together over food while raising money for local causes.

Guests will be able to enjoy freshly grilled food in exchange for a donation, with all proceeds going directly to the B&Q Foundation. The funds support community organisations improving homes, gardens, and shared spaces across the UK — including hospices, women’s refuges, and homelessness support services.

Alongside in-store events, people across the country are being encouraged to host their own BB&Qs at home, turning summer gatherings into fundraising moments.

Barriers to Community Connection

While interest in local engagement is high, the research also highlights barriers preventing people from getting involved:

  • 31% say they are too busy
  • 35% prefer to keep to themselves
  • 11% don’t know how to start conversations
  • One in five say there aren’t enough local events
  • This rises to over a quarter of 18–24-year-olds

There is also a confidence gap, with 22% saying they are too shy or socially anxious to engage locally.

However, there’s optimism: 52% of people say they would feel comfortable attending a charity event alone, suggesting shared causes can help people take the first step.

Why Community Events Matter More Than Ever

The research highlights the wider benefits of local events beyond socialising alone:

  • 52% say they help people make friends
  • 34% believe they improve mental wellbeing (rising to 40% among millennials)
  • 31% say they make their area feel safer

These findings suggest that stronger community ties don’t just improve social lives — they can positively impact mental health and perceptions of safety too.

Charity BBQs, Discounts, and Giving Back

As part of the initiative, visitors at BB&Q events will be able to:

  • Sit at shared outdoor tables designed to spark conversation
  • Take food away or dine in
  • Access exclusive BBQ discounts in-store and online

In addition, £15 from every barbecue sold between 5–18 June will be donated to the B&Q Foundation, helping fund even more community projects.

“Turning Strangers Into Friends”

Katherine Paterson, Trustee at the B&Q Foundation, said:

“People want to feel part of a community, but often don’t know where to begin – this research shows that the desire to connect is already there. Supporting local charities gives people a shared purpose and makes the BB&Q campaign a positive experience for everyone involved.”

She added that the initiative aims to bring people together in simple, accessible ways that turn “strangers into friends” while supporting vital local causes.

At a time when many people feel increasingly disconnected, the BB&Q initiative highlights how small, shared experiences — like a neighbourhood BBQ — can play a meaningful role in rebuilding community ties across the UK.
