TRAVELODGE STUDY REVEALS BRITISH HOTEL BREAKFAST HABITS: WHY WE’RE STILL SAYING ‘SORRY’ AT THE BUFFET

A new nationwide study has lifted the lid on one of Britain’s most quietly awkward rituals: the hotel breakfast buffet.

Commissioned by Travelodge, home of the popular Unlimited Breakfast, the survey of 2,000 Brits reveals a culture of politeness, hesitation and low-level self-consciousness that plays out every morning across hotel dining rooms nationwide.

From apologising at the hash brown tray to deploying a “table guard” while your partner queues for pancakes, British hotel breakfast behaviour is as ritualistic as it is relatable.

The Great British Buffet Shuffle

According to the research, eight in 10 Brits admit to sitting down when first shown to their table — only to stand straight back up again and head for the buffet.

For couples, strategy comes into play. Over a third (37%) say one person remains behind to “man” the table while the other gathers plates. It’s a coordinated effort worthy of a military manoeuvre — all before 9am.

And, of course, there’s the apologising.

The average Brit says “sorry” at least twice while navigating the buffet — whether brushing past someone at the juice station or reaching over for scrambled eggs. An extra-apologetic 13% say they utter it five times or more during breakfast alone.

Portion Anxiety Is Real

Despite the laid-back setting, 35% of guests admit they feel conscious about being judged over their portion sizes as they walk back to their table.

Yet the numbers tell a different story. On average, Brits enjoy two portions at a buffet breakfast — and 27% boldly go back for thirds.

It seems our fear of judgement rarely stands in the way of another hash brown.

The Nation’s Favourite Buffet Picks

When it comes to buffet favourites, the classics still hold strong — but tastes are evolving.

Top 10 British Breakfast Buffet Treats

  1. Hash browns (41%)

  2. Pancakes (39%)

  3. Fruit salad (37%)

  4. Croissants (36%)

  5. Bacon (29%)

  6. Scrambled eggs (29%)

  7. Baked beans (25%)

  8. Bagels (21%)

  9. Toast and preserves (21%)

  10. White bread (17%)

Hash browns take the crown, with 41% naming them their top choice. But interestingly, pancakes (39%) and fruit salad (37%) now outrank bacon and scrambled eggs (both 29%), suggesting a shift toward a more balanced mix of sweet, fresh and traditional options.

At the juice counter, Brits are juicing more than ever. Guests consume two glasses on average, while one in three (33%) drink three or more glasses during breakfast.

The End of the Traditional Fry-Up?

A spokesperson for Travelodge commented:

“Our research reveals that the British breakfast buffet is a unique social minefield, where traditional politeness often battles with the temptation of a second helping. Whether it’s the ‘buffet apology’ or the strategy of ‘manning the table,’ we all have our own morning rituals.

Buffet breakfasts are no longer all about the traditional English. We see many guests swapping the classic fry-up for fruit or toasted bagels with peanut butter and banana and choosing barista-style coffee and dairy alternatives over a standard brew.”

The findings reflect broader UK food trends, with more travellers opting for lighter, fresher options over a heavy full English breakfast. Bagels, fruit, yoghurt and speciality coffee are increasingly part of the morning routine.
