The Alternative Sport Show: Maddie Hinch

In this episode of  The Alternative Sport ShowMatthew Connell and Andre Dixon speak with Maddie Hinch a world number one-ranked hockey goalkeeper with medals galore to her name.

Maddie Hinch made her senior debut in 2008 and was later awarded a full-time contract with GB Hockey in 2010. Since then she’s established herself as the national team’s first-choice goalkeeper and has gone on to represent England and Great Britain more than 100 times.

Maddie is currently the world number one ranked goalkeeper in the world and won FIH Female Goalkeeper of the Year in 2016, after three previous nominations.

Career highlights so far include a European silver medal in Belgium 2013, a Commonwealth Games silver medal in Glasgow 2014 and a gold medal in the 2015 European Championships in London. The big one, though, is winning gold with Great Britain at the 2016 Games in Rio, saving all four penalties in the final shoot-out against The Netherlands.

Ironically, given her Dutch opposition in the Rio final, Maddie has switched from the UK to play her club hockey in the Netherlands, with SCHC in Utrecht.

There’s every chance Maddie and her team-mates will face the Netherlands again in Tokyo, where she’ll be hoping to add another gold medal to her collection.
