The summer’s most hotly anticipated one-and-done FPS has dropped. Enter Brain Rot Blaster: a retro-inspired web based shooter designed to spark an anti-scroll revolution and get people rethinking how they spend their time online.
Embodying the chaos of doomscrolling, Brain Rot Blaster features a cast of toxic online tropes running wild. Amongst the murky depths of internet hell, players wield the firepower of the new OnePlus Nord 5 as their weapon. A smartphone built for creating, not consuming.
But beware – this digital battleground could be your last doomscroll. The game self-destructs after just one play, so make every second count.
In the game, players face off against:
- The “Neg News Readers”, a duo of dread with fake smiles and even bleaker updates
- The “Realty TV Chick” who loves the sparkle emoji and shouts ‘Baaaaabe’
- The “Blockchain Bro”, who throws coins, equates wealth with wisdom and owns 0.3 Bitcoin
- The twitchy “Tin Foil Hat” conspiracy theorist, who peddles panic based on online forms and thinks the X Files is a documentary
- The “Wellness Guru” who levitates, throws matcha lattes and promotes a state of balance no one can achieve
- The “Hybrid Athlete” who is performance-obsessed, tracks his sessions and humble brags
- The “Alpha Dog” who worries ‘real’ men are dying out and uses cigars as a personality trait
The characters are based on research from OnePlus into the nation’s doomscrolling habits, revealing the brain-draining content we all fall victim to – from negative news (32%), to reality TV drama (32%) and rabbit-hole conspiracy theories (26%).
What’s more, 54% of Brits doomscroll in bed, robbing themselves of rest and peace of mind, resulting in 44% losing track of time while scrolling, and 17% struggling to sleep after being glued to their screen. Could this endless scroll be quietly unravelling our overall well-being?
The research reveals a worrying cycle: doomscrolling is draining our creativity, killing our productivity, and taking a serious toll on our mental wellness. To help people take back control, boost creativity and reclaim focus, Behavioural Psychologist, Dr. Linda Papadopoulos, shares practical tips on how to break free from the grips of the scroll.
Dr. Linda Papadopoulos, Behavioural Psychologist, commented: “What’s particularly striking in the OnePlus data is the sheer scale of the problem: people are spending the equivalent of two full days each month scrolling through distressing content and then wondering why they feel depleted. It’s a classic maladaptive coping mechanism: we instinctively reach for our phones to soothe uncertainty, but the constant stream of negative information only heightens our stress levels and fragments our focus.
“The research also reveals that people aren’t just wasting time, they’re losing the opportunity to connect with what really matters. Over half of those surveyed said they wish they had more hours in the day, yet those hours are quietly being swallowed by an endless scroll. This isn’t a question of willpower or laziness, it’s a reflection of how our brains are wired to seek out threat, novelty, and stimulation.
“The problem is that this cycle is self-reinforcing: the more we feed it, the harder it is to stop. If we don’t learn to consciously interrupt that loop by using our smartphones more purposefully, whether to explore hobbies, engage with content that inspires us, or connect meaningfully with others we’ll continue to trade away our time, our wellbeing, our creativity, and even our relationships for fleeting digital distraction. The cost isn’t just lost time, it’s lost connection, clarity, and calm.”
Celina Shi, Chief Marketing Officer of OnePlus Europe, added: “Brits lose an entire weekend each month to endless scrolling,* and 52% wish they had more hours in their day. OnePlus has taken action by launching Brain Rot Blaster, a satirical game that holds up a mirror to our scrolling habits. Like the game, the OnePlus Nord 5 empowers users to break the scroll cycle, unlock creativity, and live by our Never Settle mindset.”
The OnePlus Nord 5 launched on 8th July and is a device built to help users fight the scroll and ‘Up Their Game’. Made for those who want more power, play, and possibilities, the smartphone is ideal for gamers, creators, and multitaskers. With AI Summary, AI Translate, and Open Canvas+ multitasking, it boosts user productivity.
And, when it comes to creativity, its powerful 50MP front camera, flagship 144Hz display, 7,000mAh battery with 80W SUPERVOOC fast charging, and smart shortcuts like the Plus Key, make it perfect for fast, sharp content creation. This device isn’t for scrolling – it’s for doing more and creating more.
