If 2025 has felt more complicated than ever, you’re not alone. New research by Google has revealed that 71% of Brits believe life is more complex now than it was a decade ago — and two-thirds (67%) blame the dizzying speed of new trends.
From AI-powered fashion hacks to ever-changing dating apps, the nation is feeling overwhelmed — and it’s affecting more than just our social feeds. According to the study, 30% of Brits feel pressured to stay “in the know”, while nearly half (48%) have pretended to understand a trend just to save face.
The Rise of “Trend Lag”
Google has coined this cultural moment “Trend Lag” — a national feeling of falling behind in a world that moves too fast. Almost half of respondents (49%) admitted they can’t keep up, and 45% said they’re unsure which trends to follow in the first place.
It’s not just about style, either. Over a third (35%) have jumped into new fitness crazes without understanding their benefits, and the average Brit feels pressure to change their look four times a month. Even dating trends have taken a toll, with 38% saying that chasing the latest love lingo has made real connection harder.
Google’s “Search Bar” Pop-Up Lands in Covent Garden
To help us cut through the chaos, Google is opening “The Search Bar”, the world’s longest coffee bar, right in the heart of Covent Garden from 7–9 November at The Stables, 40 Earlham Street, London WC2H 9LH.
In partnership with Clara Amfo, one of the UK’s most recognisable radio and TV presenters, the pop-up invites visitors to “step off the trend treadmill” and discover how Google’s new AI Mode can make searching more intuitive, personal, and creative.
“I’m a curious person by nature and profession,” said Amfo. “Using AI Mode in Google as a soundboard is so useful — from restaurant reviews to fashion tips or niche facts about interview guests. It’s simple to integrate into your day and helps you go deeper into the things you care about.”
The event is free and open to the public, serving coffee with a side of curiosity.
How AI Is Powering a New Era of Trend Discovery
With its new AI-powered search tools, Google is making it easier than ever to explore complex questions in one go — whether you’re asking about the next big style movement or the science behind your new wellness habit.
AI Mode brings together text, voice, and even image search, so you can ask questions naturally — just like you would to a friend. Instead of multiple searches, Google now delivers deeper, more contextual answers.
Matt Cooke from Google summed it up best:
“People aren’t just searching for keywords anymore — they’re seeking context and personalised insights. AI Mode helps Brits not only keep up with trends but embrace them authentically.”
