LESBIAN SPACE PRINCESS RELEASE DATE CONFIRMED: AWARD-WINNING QUEER ANIMATION LANDS IN UK CINEMAS THIS MAY!

Peccadillo Pictures has officially confirmed that Lesbian Space Princess will arrive in UK and Irish cinemas on 22 May, bringing one of the year’s most talked-about queer animated films to the big screen.

Fresh from major festival success, the film is already building serious momentum following its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it took home the prestigious Teddy Award—an honour celebrating outstanding LGBTQIA+ cinema. It later secured the Audience Award for Best Australian Feature at the Sydney Film Festival, cementing its status as a breakout hit.

A Bold, Queer Sci-Fi Comedy With Heart

Directed by South Australian creatives Leela Varghese and Emma Hough Hobbs, Lesbian Space Princess is a vibrant, laugh-out-loud animated adventure set across a wildly imaginative queer universe.

At the centre of the story is Princess Saira, the introverted daughter of the flamboyant rulers of Planet Clitopolis. When her bounty-hunter girlfriend Kiki abruptly dumps her for being “too needy,” things quickly spiral—especially after Kiki is kidnapped by a group of futuristic antagonists known as the Straight White Maliens.

With just 24 hours to save her ex, Saira is forced out of her comfort zone and into an intergalactic mission to recover her missing labrys—a legendary weapon and the only thing that can secure Kiki’s release.

A Visually Electric, Character-Driven Journey

What unfolds is a chaotic, candy-coloured odyssey filled with unexpected friendships, including a standout connection with runaway pop star Willow, and encounters with everything from malfunctioning spacecraft to absurd intergalactic politics.

The film blends high-energy humour with a surprisingly tender coming-of-age arc, exploring themes of identity, self-worth and queer love—all wrapped in a visually explosive animation style.

A Diverse Voice Cast Bringing It To Life

The film features an impressive ensemble cast led by Shabana Azeez and Bernie Van Tiel, alongside rising and established names including Gemma Chua-Tran, Richard Roxburgh and Madeleine Sami.

Comedy collective Aunty Donna also lend their signature chaotic energy, while Kween Kong—known from RuPaul’s Drag Race—adds further star power to the voice lineup.

Championing Emerging and Underrepresented Voices

Beyond its humour and visual flair, Lesbian Space Princess stands out for its commitment to representation. The film is a celebration of LGBTQIA+ storytelling and culturally diverse creatives, both on-screen and behind the scenes—something that continues to resonate strongly across global audiences.

Lesbian Space Princess lands in UK and Irish cinemas on 22 May, distributed by Peccadillo Pictures—a studio well-known for championing bold, queer storytelling.
