ELIZA SHARES SOUL-BARING NEW SINGLE ‘CHEDDAR’ AHEAD OF THIRD ALBUM THE DARKENING GREEN

Alt-R&B singer-songwriter and producer ELIZA has returned with ‘Cheddar’, a bold and emotionally charged new single taken from her forthcoming third studio album, The Darkening Green, due for release on 4 March.

The track follows recent single ‘Anyone Else’ and continues to build anticipation for what is shaping up to be ELIZA’s most personal and expansive body of work to date. Fans can pre-save The Darkening Green here and listen to ‘Cheddar’ here.

A Sharp Reflection on Power, Love and Self-Worth

On ‘Cheddar’, ELIZA confronts the emotional cost of an exploitative relationship with clarity and bite. The song’s lyrics serve as a timely reminder to protect your energy and refuse to let past hurt harden your sense of self as a new year begins.

Built on a vintage funk drum pattern, urgent bassline and rich, soulful textures, ELIZA’s vocals emerge from a place of bruised realisation. She sings:

“Cheddar, is that all I am to you…
My love was a treasure, always on the house.
You’ve shown your true agenda, and I’m afraid I knew deep down.”

Despite the spiky emotions at its core, the track ends on a defiant, hopeful note, with ELIZA reclaiming her power: “You won’t make me bitter, it’s not worth my shimmer… roses blooming now with extra thorns.”

Crafted With Trusted Collaborators

‘Cheddar’ was written and produced by ELIZA alongside Finlay ‘Phairo’ Robson and EMIL, whose credits include work with Loyle Carner, Sampha, and Doja Cat. The result is a track that feels both intimate and self-assured, blending classic soul influences with modern alt-R&B finesse.

The song marks the second release from The Darkening Green, following ‘Anyone Else’, and offers a deeper insight into the album’s emotional and thematic scope.

The Darkening Green: Rewilding the Self

Described as ELIZA’s “most fiercely human record yet”, The Darkening Green expands her earthy R&B soundscape while exploring the idea that our ecological and emotional worlds mirror one another.

The album examines what happens when we drift away from ourselves, distracted by speed, noise, ego and the grind of modern life. Across the record, the North London native traces a journey of emotional and spiritual rewilding — from the messiness of love and intimacy to the heat of connection and the complexity of being human in an increasingly hardening culture.

Upcoming highlights include future singles ‘Major’ and ‘Pleasure Boy’, both set to further showcase the album’s depth and ambition.

A Confident Independent Voice in UK R&B

It has been eight years since ELIZA left behind her former Eliza Doolittle moniker and the major label system to carve out her own lane as an independent R&B artist. Since then, she has released two critically acclaimed albums — 2018’s A Real Romantic and 2022’s A Sky Without Stars — both praised for their spell-binding songwriting and themes spanning climate change, love, sex and community.

Her evolution has not gone unnoticed. ELIZA was tipped by i-D as one of the UK’s rising artists to watch, while DORK Magazine praised her sound as:

“Post-pop and perfectly placed… her new music carries the confidence of someone who knows what she wants.”

With over 720,000 monthly Spotify listeners and more than 33 million YouTube views for her COLORS performance of ‘Wasn’t Looking’, the stage is firmly set for The Darkening Green to be a defining chapter in her career.
