The Voices Behind Death Note’s Most Iconic Characters

Shannon Chan-Kent brought both charm and emotional depth to Misa Amane, balancing the character’s bubbly pop-idol persona with moments of vulnerability. Chan-Kent is also widely known for her work in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and as Amy Rose in Sonic Prime, alongside extensive voice and vocal performance work across franchises such as Slugterra and the Barbie animated universe.

Voicing the fan-favourite Shinigami Ryuk, Brian Drummond delivered a sardonic and unforgettable performance that helped define the character’s dark humour. Drummond is best known as the original English voice of Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z and has lent his distinctive voice to major franchises including Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Ninjago, and Transformers: Cybertron.

Brad Swaile, whose portrayal of Light Yagami remains one of the most critically acclaimed performances in anime dubbing, captured the character’s chilling transformation from idealistic student to calculating anti-hero. Beyond Death Note, Swaile is recognised for roles in Black Lagoon, multiple Gundam series, Dragon Ball Z, and X-Men: Evolution, frequently voicing complex and intelligent characters.

Completing the quartet, Alessandro Juliani brought quiet intensity and sharp intelligence to the enigmatic detective L. In addition to his animation work, Juliani is well known for live-action roles in Battlestar Galactica, Smallville, The 100, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, showcasing an impressive range across science fiction and drama.
