In today’s digital age, it seems even love can’t escape the pull of smartphones. New research from NYX Hotel Holborn reveals that nearly half of Brits can’t go more than 30 minutes without checking their phone during a date, showing just how much screens have become a third wheel in modern relationships.
The survey of 2,000 UK adults in relationships found that 48% of couples spend up to half an hour on their phone during a date, while only 34% say they wouldn’t touch their device at all. Younger generations are even more plugged in: over three-quarters of Gen Z (77%) and 84% of Millennials admit to scrolling during romantic moments.
Social Media and Messaging Apps Steal the Spotlight
Couples aren’t just casually checking their phones. Over a third (38%) have felt ignored by their partner due to phone use, with nearly a quarter experiencing it on special occasions like Valentine’s Day, birthdays, or anniversaries. Among Gen Z, this figure jumps dramatically to 67%.
Social media proves to be the ultimate distraction (26% overall), followed by messaging apps (21%), work emails (6%), and gaming (5%). Gen Z couples also point to gaming (17%) as a major interruption, while social media dominates for both Gen Z (37%) and Millennials (46%).
Despite the constant digital pull, Brits still crave real connection. The research shows that 66% believe Valentine’s Day is best spent phone-free, highlighting a desire to reclaim intimacy away from screens.
