Analysing the favourites for the Super Bowl

The Kansas City Chiefs dramatic Super Bowl win over the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, saw a peak time audience of 113 million viewers across digital and traditional TV platforms in the US. This year’s event promises to be even bigger, as teams battle it out to reach the Allegiant Stadium on  February 11, 2024, in the hope of getting their hands on the Vince Lombardi trophy.

What is the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events in the world, with a long and storied history that continues to capture the imagination of fans not just in the US, but across the globe. Played every year, it is the final game of the season that sees the two best teams come head-to-head to decide who gets to be crowned champions.

But the Super Bowl is so much more than a game of football, it’s a cultural spectacle that brings together family and friends and unites the country around their love for America’s number one sport. Whether it’s the spectacular halftime show, super bowl parties, famous celebrities in the audience or the on-field action, a Super Bowl has something for everyone.

With so many unforgettable games over the years, the Super Bowl never fails to excite, and with this year’s title looking too close to call, we take a look at some of the early season contenders to go all the way.

Kansas City Chiefs

The current champions started the season with a shock week one loss to the Detroit Lions, but a strong run of results has seen them return to normal ways and top the favourites list according to the latest NFL odds.

It’s impossible to rule out a team that has Patrick Mahomes as their QB, and the Chiefs talisman will be looking to take his team all the way again and add to his two Super Bowl rings.

With a roster that includes Isiah Pacheco, Travis Kelce, Drue Tranquill, Rashee Rice, and Chris Jones, they are always going to be a threat. But add three-time coach of the year Andy Reid in to the mix, a guy in his 25th year as a head coach, and you’ve got a championship wining machine. Keep an eye out for the latest NFL player props.

The Chiefs are attempting to become only the ninth different team to win the Lombardi Trophy in back-to-back seasons. As long as Mahomes stays fit, it’s hard to look beyond this team to get it done all over again.

Back-to-Back Super Bowl Champions
  • Packers: Super Bowls I and II
  • Dolphins: VII and VIII
  • Steelers: IX and X
  • Steelers: XIII and XIV
  • 49ers: XXIII and XXIV
  • Cowboys: XXVII and XXVIII
  • Broncos: XXXII and XXXIII
  • Patriots: XXXVIII and XXXIX

Philadelphia Eagles

After last year’s exhilarating 38-35 Super Bowl defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs, QB Jalen Hurts looks like a man determined to put things right, picking up where he left off last season. The defending NFC champions started the season 5-0 without being at their best, and look favourites to retain the NFC title and go all the way to the Super Bowl.

The Eagles had a great draft class and their talented roster includes running back D’Andre Swift, rookie Jalen Carter, veteran Jason Kelce, plus DeVonta Smith, A.J. Brown, and Haason Reddick. Head coach Nick Sirianni is also a year older and wiser and will have learnt a lot from their Super Bowl defeat.

A surprise 20-14 defeat to the Jets ended their unbeaten run and saw Hurts making plenty of mistakes, but it’s a long season and they will learn from that setback. Don’t be surprised to see a repeat of last seasons Super Bowl in Allegiant Stadium in February.

NFL teams with the most Super Bowl wins
  1. New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers 6 Wins
  2. Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers 5 Wins
  3. Green Bay Packers and New York Giants 4 Wins

San Francisco 49ers

Five straight win s at the start of the season, saw San Francisco 49ers and the Eagles join a list of 62 teams that have started 5-0 since 1990. However, only nine of those teams have gone on to win the Super Bowl.

Second-year QB Brock Purdy is playing at the top of his game and the 49ers look the best of the NFC, but narrow defeats to the Browns and the Vikings have dampened early season expectations. However, Christian McCaffrey, Nick Bosa, George Kittle, Trent Williams, Deebo Samuel, and Fred Warner, are just a few of the reasons to take this team seriously.

NFL teams that have not won a Super Bowl
  • Arizona Cardinals
  • Atlanta Falcons
  • Buffalo Bills
  • Carolina Panthers
  • Cincinnati Bengals
  • Cleveland Browns
  • Detroit Lions
  • Houston Texans
  • Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Los Angeles Chargers
  • Minnesota Vikings
  • Tennessee Titans

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys may be up against the Eagles in the NFC East, but don’t rule them out. With Dak Prescott pulling the strings, the Cowboys have an offense capable of scoring 30 points each week. The embarrassing 42-10 loss to the 49ers in week 5 saw Prescott throw three interceptions, but they came back with a gutsy victory over the Chargers the following week to prove the doubters wrong. However, any more poor performances like that and they’ll be looking at yet another season of failure.

Dallas are one of the most successful teams in the history of the NFL, with 5 Super Bowl victories to their name, but the last of those wins came way back in January 1996 at Super Bowl XXX. If they are going to add to that tally, they’re going to have to be perfect from here on in.
