WORLD CUP CONSUMER SPENDING PREDICTED TO PEAK DURING GROUP STAGE AT £1.2 BILLION

British football fans’ World Cup spending is predicted to peak during the group stage at £1.2 billion, according to a new report.

The World Cup 2022 Spending Report by VoucherCodes.co.uk predicts that 20.7 million British football fans will tune into the tournament’s preliminary round across the nation’s homes, pubs, bars and restaurants.

However, the tournament’s irregular kick off times, coupled with rising costs and the first ever winter tournament, mean that only 5.8 million people are expected to watch the games from local pubs, bars, and restaurants during the group stage. This compares to 16.2 million Brits who are predicted to tune in from home, as fans seek a more budget-friendly way of watching the games.

As a result, retail spending is set to far outstrip revenue in hospitality venues. During the group stage, retail expenditure is expected to spike at £1.01 billion, with 14.1 million shoppers hitting stores to stock up on match day essentials.

Consumers are predicted to shell out £629.3 million on food and drink retailers alone. Supporters will also spend £121.8 million on sportswear, £34.7 million on souvenirs, and £227.3 million on new TV electricals to enjoy the matches.

Comparatively, hospitality spend is forecast to reach £205.2 million during the group stage – £807.9 million less than retail spend. This is the highest spend predicted across all stages of the tournament due to the sheer number of games being played. It is anticipated that 31.1 million pints will be sold in hospitality venues during this stage – also the highest number for a single tournament stage.
