Where to eat now: BKC Soho

BKC (Biryani Kebab Chai), has announced the opening of its second location, bringing its acclaimed authentic Indian cuisine from the Awadhi region to Moor St, Soho last month and we got to try what is on offer. Following the success of its first site which opened last September in Marble Arch, the second outpost in Soho marks the commencement of a major expansion plan for BKC, with additional sites lined up over the coming years.

BKC is renowned for its authentic Awadhi cuisine, originating from Awadh (modern-day Lucknow) in Northern India, to London for the first time. Awadhi cuisine is defined by its aromatics, distinct flavours, and unique textures. The bawarchis (chefs) and rakabdars (gourmet cooks) of Awadh invented the Dum style of cooking or the art of cooking over a slow fire, which has become synonymous with Lucknow today, known as Awadh of India. Their spreads consisted of elaborate dishes such as kebabs, kormas, biryanis, Galawat, nahari-kulchas, zarda, sheermal, rumali rotis, and warqi parathas. The richness of Awadh cuisine lies not only in the variety of cuisine but also in the ingredients used like mutton, paneer, and rich spices, which include cardamom and saffron.

The grilled platter we started with was perfectly cooked and the variety of options was an absolute delight to the senses. A special mention should go to the Dahi Ke Kebab – which we could not get enough of!

Next up was the biryani – the delicate yet complex flavours were a perfect balance and partnered with the fresh, homemade popadoms and raita it was absolutely stunning.

This was then followed by a selection of curries served with Lacca Paratha. These were truly the highlight of the meal – especially the Bhuna Ghost which (despite being absolutely stuffed) we demolished!

The finale of the meal were the selection of sweets which completed this beautiful meal.

The rest of the new expansive menu, serves guests a royal, soul satisfying feast that appeals to all the senses with delectable and aromatic flavours in every mouthful. The menu  features much-loved BKC classics alongside a carefully curated selection of new tantalising dishes including Bhatti Ka Khargosh (Chargrilled grilled rabbit legs infused with allspice and yoghurt), Tandoori Lobster (Chargrilled lobster infused with lime & pepper served with corn on the cob and raw mango chutney), and Kathal Ki Shami (Pan-seared jackfruit and walnut patties served with coriander chutney).
