As summer gets into full swing, it’s time to get BBQ ready with these top tips, delicious recipe suggestions and corresponding wine pairings from Heliot Steak House’s Executive Chef and Meatologist, Ioannis Grammenos, and Head of Wine, Salvatore Russo.
When it comes to hosting, it’s important to be well-prepared so make sure you have an ample supply of charcoal, your knives have been sharpened, and you have all the necessary utensils ahead of time.
Classic Burger and Beaujolais
- Dish: A classic burger is a BBQ must-have. For a special twist, add some fresh thyme and lemon zest to your burger mix.
- Pair with: A slightly chilled, fruit-forward red, such as Beaujolais or Valpolicella, goes perfectly with a burger. Both of these wines have a light body that are perfect for a hot summer day. Additionally, these wines are unpretentious, just like a juicy burger.
Chicken Wings and Chenin Blanc
- Dish: You can’t go wrong with chicken wings, particularly when done on the BBQ. Marinate the wings with fresh oregano and black pepper for added flavour.
- Pair with: Chicken wings go very well with an oaked Chenin Blanc. The creaminess and body of the wine complement the white meat perfectly, creating a delightful pairing.
Grilled Vegetables and Albariño
- Dish: Grilled vegetables are delicious as either both a main course and a side dish when accompanying something else. Grill a combination of carrots, leeks, asparagus, and oyster mushrooms with turmeric and fennel seeds for the tastiest vegetable medley.
- Pair with: Grilled vegetables pair incredibly well with Albariño. Albariño is known for its delightful combination of high acidity, ethereal salinity, citrus flavours, and a long dry finish. These characteristics beautifully complement the smoky and charred flavours of grilled vegetables done on the BBQ.
