Verge’s top albums of 2016

2016 is drawing to a sudden close and 2017 is on the horizon. It seems this year has flown by and we’re glad that we’ve had an awesome soundtrack to get us through! There have been so many iconic releases this year and even though it was near impossible to choose, we’re going to list our top 10 for you to listen to before the year is over!

If you haven’t heard this album then it must be because you live on Mars. It’s probably the most incredible album of hers to date. Even though we accept that there are some non Bey-hives out there and we are not trying to sound biased, but the creativity and passion in this album is enough to make even the toughest Beyoncé critic crumble. From the Lemonade film to the beautiful artwork and banging tunes, it’s impossible not to love. If you haven’t listened already please do!

From one Knowles sister to another, Solange scored her first U.S. Billboard no.1 album with ‘A Seat at the Table’. This album comments on the difficulties of being a black woman in today’s world and also comments on other social issues that is impossible to ignore. Her soulful touch has provided an album that relates to women everywhere- we’ve even seen some men singing along. If you haven’t got around to it already, be sure to listen and prepare yourself for an insightful journey.

Cole will disappear for a while but you know that only means he’s working on something incredible. This album had such an authentic and honest touch that you can feel the passion in every song. He did not bite his tongue throughout the album and we encourage you to sit and analyse each sentence to get the full J.Cole experience.

Kendrick has never been shy when it comes to expressing and embracing emotions and he did not disappoint with his latest work. Kendrick has a talent for telling stories with his music and this release did just that. From Good Kid M.A.A.D City to To Pimp a Butterfly to his latest release, the transition is seamless. He’s progressed a lot since Section.80 and we’re proud.

Radiohead is always playing in the Verge offices and we were all stoked to listen to their latest release. It’s an album filled with intense character and it is nothing short of what you would expect from the legendary band. Its been known to convert new fans too!

Chance managed to give a whole new sound to Hip Hop and his third mixtape did not leave us questioning his intentions for 2017. Chance has continued to sweep us off our feet since ‘Acid Rap’ and this just made us extend our love for him even further.

Describing Kanye as creative is an understatement. He’s pathed the way for many and has remained exciting and refreshing since the very beginning. Although Kanye has had some interesting moments in 2016, his music has continued to make us very happy fans. This album takes us further into Kanye than we’ve been before – definitely a must listen – and the merchandise is pretty great too.

Princess Rih has always got us feeling fearless and this album did just that. If you want emotion mixed with attitude and sass ‘ANTI’ is the way forward. Since ‘Rated R’, Rih has left us wanting her demeanor, but since there is only one Rihanna we’re all just going to have to keep trying.

92501ad97eba0f22b05aca03d90937dc4af2735bKAYTRANADA – 99.9%
Verge has always been big supporters of Kaytranada- we’ve personally followed him from festival to festival just to hear his refreshing and distinctive productions and remixes. We couldn’t wait to hear his new release and we got everything we could have imagined. I have a feeling that this album will still be getting played in the summer of 2017 – that is unless he’s got something even more exciting for us in the works!

Frank Ocean left us waiting for a very, very long time. But it’s okay, all is forgiven now we know what he’s been working on. This album was worth the wait and still surprised us with more tales and beauty than the last! Please never keep us waiting that long again, Frank!

005067950_500SIA – THIS IS ACTING
Sia has been under our noses for a long time and we’ve been fans from the beginning. This album combines her pure, raw talent with pop-infused songs that will, no doubt, be played at every party over the holidays, and into the New Year. Her vocals are enough to lift any spirit and although you probably already know every song without realizing, be sure to have a listen to the album as a whole!

Drake has had a busy few years- from touring with Future, to headlining Coachella and releasing an infinite amount of material to keep us constantly happy. ‘Views’ is Drake’s fourth studio album and it has a wide variety of moods to suit every weather. Drake is set to release his fifth album ‘More Life’ in early 2017, which gives us something exciting to look forward to in the New Year!

DJ Khaled has been one of the top Internet icons of 2016; he even has his own book! But besides from being a Snapchat lord, he’s managed to whip up an album full of bangers. It’s beyond a “major key” for you to check it out before the year is out!
