Verge’s Artist(s) of the Week: Jaden and Willow Smith

Today the artist(s) of the week might be easy names to shrug off, known for a while as just celebrity kids trying to get their moment of fame. Children of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow and her brother Jaden have been in the spotlight since early ages, Jaden with his acting career in The Pursuit of Happiness and The Karate Kid and Willow with her overplayed and repetitive track, “Whip My Hair”. Since then, they have overcome being in the shadow of their parents and the clichés they were turning into by staying out of the spotlight and taking time to write, practice, and discover their individual talents.

We first started really becoming aware of what they have been creating after Jaden opened up his YouTube channel under the project title “Nostalgic,” releasing many tracks including ones featuring the gorgeously ethereal voice of his sister.

Jaden is currently continuing work on his music/rap, acting, and fashion career making male dresses popular with his clothing line MSFTSrep and recently being cast in the film The Good Lord Bird.

Though Willow, is the one that has us talking lately. After being the youngest artist to sign to Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation, a bunch of singles with mixed reviews, and an EP, she surprised-released her debut album Ardipithecus this last week and today it is internationally available. The album, titled after the name of the first hominid bones found on earth, is loaded with moody lyrics, mellow beats, and a mature sound. Check it out on Spotify today and you can become obsessed with the rest of us!
