Verge Music: What’s Hot This Week

With the new season of summer coming in full force, music is following suit with more fun and lively summer bangers hitting the charts.

Best Of The Week

Halsey just released her new single and video for “Nightmare”. The bop is punk-rock meets pop and shows off a side of the “Without Me” singer that we haven’t seen before.

“I’m tired and angry, but somebody should be,” says Halsey on the new track

Alongside an all-women cast, director, producer, set designer and crew. Halsey creates a powerful song about women empowerment and healthy anger. The singer sports a dominatrix look in a blue mirrored room, a Godfather suit on the streets of a violent city, fire engine red hair in a cheeta corset and red rope bondage black widow-like set. Including Halsey’s friends Cara Delevingne and Debbie Harry for a fun feature.

The singer vents angry and dominate lyrics like, “I keep a record of the wreckage in my life, I gotta recognize the weapon in my mind,” and “I’ve been polite, but won’t be caught dead. Lettin’ a man tell me what I should do with my bed.”

Halsey’s song especially makes sense for what is going on in the US at the moment. With tons of anti-abortion bills passing, it makes sense for a pissed-off, women empowerment song right now. The world needs it.

Madison Beer Sends A Message To Society

Madison Beer’s impeccable fashion and voice is one thing. But her lyrical songwriting ability has now elevated to a whole new level with her single “Dear Society”.

The emotional song rings powerful lyrics like, “Been 21 since 17, thanks to all the magazines. Man, sometimes, I just wanna scream and break my screen.”

The song includes Beer’s natural and beautiful voice over the main verses. As well as an Imogen Heap-like, voice synthesized chorus that comes off both robotic and human at the same time, ironically. The highlight of the whole single is the song’s bridge where Beer reads off her final message to society and sings in a pain that hits straight through the heart.

Beer released the music video for “Dear Society” this week. In the film, she is a lab rat in a man’s experiment. Beer can be seen restrained, being observed by doctors who we believe represent society and trying to break free.

Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran Break Back Into The Charts

In other music news, Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran premiered their new music video for their comeback single “I Don’t Care”. And within the four days the video has been up, it already grosses a massive 38 million views. Not bad for the two artists that haven’t released new music in over a year. The song is light, carefree, fun and energetic. Perfect for a beach picnic or driving on a sunny day. So, the song is for sure going to be playing all summer long with its catchy tune and beat.

Also, breaking into the charts this week: Charlie XCX and Lizzo collaborate on the new single “Blame It On Your Love”. The song is a remix of XCX’s original version of her song “Track 10” from her Pop2 mixtape. The song features lively EDM breaks and techno beats XCX is known for including.

But, the real star of this track is Lizzo’s verse. It may be short, but it’s a burst of energy and hip-hop the song needs. Rapping, “Baby, I know that you can’t control it (Control it), But my body like a swisher, just roll it (Roll it),” makes for lyrics you can’t help but sing along with.

Other honorable mentions of the week:

Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus release the “Old Town Road” movie music video.

Melanie Martinez releases a teaser video for her highly anticipated project titled “K-12”. The last time Martinez released an album was in 2015 with her critically acclaimed album “Cry Baby”.

Quick Beat of the Week

Rihanna just announced over Twitter that her new album will be coming out this year and will be a reggaeton and Barbados inspired project.
