DZY is a young and upcoming artist who’s talent includes producing, writing and rapping. He has two singles out at moment – ‘VIBE’ and ‘STRESS’ both of which are on YouTube. We got the chance to have a chat with DZY to get into mindset of the artist and ask him questions about the development of his new album ‘I’ve Decided’ which is available on the 4/12/18.
What made you make music and why?
I grew up listening to music, when I was 2 or 3 months old my sister used to babysit me and we would listen to music on full blast; I just had a passion for it. I saw all these rappers wear diamond rings, chains, buy houses and I said to myself I will be like that one day and I started writing music and it helped me become humble and positive no matter what.
We know you have a new album coming out called ‘I’ve Decided’, is there a meaning behind it and what is your favourite track?
‘I’ve Decided’ for me personally means I call the shots, I made the name for people that have a lot on their mind but they just don’t know how to say it. I felt like this would be rule-breaking and exciting and I could show everybody how I can switch up genres. My favourite track has to be either ‘Best life’ or ‘Cautious’ because they’re inspiring songs and they speak to you in many different ways.
How did you come up with your musician name?
It’s actually a funny story, I was 10 years old and I was listening to the radio. Lil Wayne, Drake and Chris Brown were on the radio saying their nicknames “Drizzy” , “Weezy” etc. I said to myself ‘I’m going to call myself Deezy’, originally my name had two E’s in it but I decided to shorten it because I thought it was unique and different.
What is your genre of music?
I would describe my music as is either Hip Hop or R’n’B because I personally feel comfortable in those genres but I want to widen my variety of music and try different genres so I can feel comfortable in all types of ways.
What is the message you want to pass on to the people who listen to your music?
The message that I want to pass on is to never be afraid, it’s okay to fail and loose. To get whatever you want in life you cannot be afraid to get it because it’s between you and the dream – no one is going to help you get it but yourself. I don’t want to be cliché, I want to be bold and understood not just because I make catchy music.
When you’re not producing tracks, what do you do in your spare time?
I either cook, clean or just hang with my friends because my friends are the reason why I am DZY. There was a situation that happened when people were doubting my vision; my group of friends told me I can do it no matter what and I picked up a pen and paper and I wrote ‘STRESS’.
Are you planning on making more collaborations with any artists?
Yes, I have a long list of artists who want to do collaborations with me, but personally I want to do more collaborations with producers I help them help me in a kind of way.
You released your first single called ‘STRESS’, what made you want to make that song and will there be a music video for the song?
‘STRESS’ was me saying what was on my mind for the past 5 years. Every single bar in that song is truthful and painful at the same time. I had to be confident enough to make it happen and it will always and forever be my favourite song. I am currently working on trying to make a music video.
Who’s your main inspiration of music?
My main inspirations are 2pac, Kevin Gates, Snoop Dogg, Mozzy, Nines and My big cousin Dylan Williams. These 6 artists are the reason why I’m very talented. All these flows combined into one – they sound unique and pure, listen to each of them and hear how they can speak to you by telling you a story and feel it.
Any advice to any students who are getting into music?
Never give up on this, no matter how many people say music is a cliché dream, if you love something you have to get it no matter what because they won’t give it to you, you have to earn it yourself and stay focused on this cause tomorrow is never promised.
