Verge Meets: Charlotte Awbery

Unlikely viral star now sets her sights on a solo career with her first single and official music video for her cover of ‘SHALLOW’.

When Charlotte Awbery was walking through the London Undergound in Feb this year, on her way to meet some friends she had no idea how her life was about to change. The gigging singer from Essex started her journey at the age of 16, and has grafted away in pubs and clubs across the UK alongside her day jobs (which include stints as a bar maid, Chauffeur and working at a plant hire company). She has also auditioned numerous times for The X Factor to no avail.

But on that day in February she was to partake in a surprise ‘finish the lyrics’ video from social media favourite Kevin Freshwater and what happened next was to stun viewers online. Set the challenge to finish the lyrics to Lady Gaga’s ‘Shallow’, Charlotte absolutely killed it, having already known the song pretty well. Ash she went on her merry way after the brief cameo she thought nothing of it.. Then, a week or so after Kevin published the video on his Facebook page, it was clear that Charlotte was the star of the clip and it went viral across the world, reaching over 1 Billion views and catching the attention of media and Gaga fans all over the world.

Understandably, interest for the as-yet-unknown London singer went through the roof and her Instagram account grew from 4k to 700k+ in less than two weeks, with celebs like Demi Lovato giving her a shout out. After a whirlwind couple of weeks of media here in the UK the story blew stateside, with Ellen DeGeneres catching wind of the inspirational story. Charlotte was invited onto The Ellen Show where she was interviewed and performed the track live to 11 Million+ viewers.

The touching story was once again picked up by media across the world, with Billboard, Time, CBS News, New York Post, Paper Mag, Complex and Business Insider in the US all sharing the news – alongside UK television appearances on ITV’s Good Morning Britain and Lorraine shows. A special live performance at a packed GAY followed, and just when it looked like she had finally ‘made it’ with a series of live shows in the diary – it all came to a sudden when Covid hit.

Having to deal with the extreme ups and downs associated with this unique experience, Charlotte had to take a breather in lockdown and utilised the time to focus on recording and releasing her own material. After this period of work behind the scenes Charlotte has now released her first official single and music video for her cover of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s ‘Shallow’.

Speaking of how the video came about, she’s told Verge:

I’m sure people will interpret this video in different ways, and to some degree I’m going to leave people guessing for now about any hidden meanings. Lady Gaga’s version of the song held a deeper meaning, and this song is special to me for many reasons. Obviously it is the song that brought me to the World’s attention, but it is also a beautiful song and I wanted the video to reflect that, as well as give a nod to the past, present and future in my life and career.

Making this video was a great experience for me, I’ve obviously never done anything like this before, and I hope everyone else enjoys the video as much as I did when it was being made. It was a challenge to create this video with basically nobody on set except one cameraman and a ballet dancer, but I thought the end result was amazing.
