Verge Meets: Anitta

We had the pleasure of having a very special chat with one of Brazil’s finest! From being an incredible business woman, to owning the dance floor and working with some of our favorite artists to create summer smashes, Anitta is sure to take over! This record breaking latin pop sensation has achieved so much so far, and we had such a great time talking to her about the beginning and what she plans to conquer next.

Tell me about your journey as an artist. How did you get started?

I’ve always dreamed about being a singer. I began by posting a video of me singing on YouTube. Then, “Furacão 2000”, a Brazilian funk company discovered me and I started performing in Brazilian funk music parties. In 2013 I released “Show das Poderosas”, that became a hit. From that point on, I kept and still keep working very hard every day to continue with the good work.

How do you carry your Brazilian heritage with you in your music and while you perform?

It’s something natural, since I’m Brazilian. I love our music, and I mix different rhythms to my songs. Everything from funk to MPB and R&B. While performing, I love dancing and feeling the energy from the public. Brazilians are happy people, filled with good energy, and I try to connect with it on stage.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

I have many inspirations, like Rihanna, Beyoncé, Gilberto Gil, Marisa Monte and Caetano Veloso. Another big inspiration for me is Mariah Carrey. I grew up listening to her songs.

Is there one artist that you see as a role model?

I’d say Mariah Carrey, Beyoncé and Gilberto Gil.

What do you think has been the most important factor in your success?

Hard work, for sure.

Tell me about a challenge you have had throughout your music career. How did you overcome it?

A big challenge was to sing funk music, as a female. Brazil is still a very chauvinist country, so it’s very hard for a women to make it happen in the funk industry.

You’ve done some amazing collaborations- what was it like working with artists like Alesso, Major Lazer and Iggy Azalea? What have you learned from these collaborations?

I have learned a lot and got many tips from them, specially on how to plan my international career. I’m very grateful for them.

If you could work on a song with any artist right now, who would it be?

There are many artists I’d like to work with. If I had to pick one, I’d choose Drake.

Tell me about your tour. Do you face any challenges performing in different countries throughout the world?

It’s always a challenge trying to connect with different people around the world, but I think I’ve been doing a good job! It makes me very happy to see so many different people enjoying my songs.

Walk me through your pre-performance rituals. What’s one thing you can’t go on stage without?

I don’t have any ritual. The one thing I try to do is to surround myself with people I love and feel their energy;

What advice do you have for aspiring young artists?

I’d tell them not to give up. Sometimes people are going to tell you you can’t. Use those negative words to push you forward and keep going!

What is the next milestone you want to conquer?

I have conquered so much already. I’m so greateful. The only thing I want right now is to bring good music to my fans.

Anitta performs at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 28th June 2018. Tickets are available at LiveNation.co.uk
