Verge Loves: D&D and Destination Fantastic

The recent rise in D&D is something that has warmed my heart greatly. Once just a small time game that only a few people might have heard of, is now something that most people know about and maybe even play themselves. The increase in popularity was helped by greatly by the internet but also shows such as Stranger Things, Critical Role and many more that now exist. The internet is definitely something that has brought D&D fans together and introduced new fans to the limitless possibilities and adventures that can be had. That is why today I am here to share with you a brand new D&D based Kickstarter.

Dungeon Masters Satine Phoenix and Stefan Pokorny will launch a Kickstarter campaign for Destination Fantastic, a documentary travel show that follows the hosts on a far-flung quest into the fabled origins of the fantasy genre, and their impact on the sprawling world of D&D.

Each episode follows Satine and Stefan on a journey they explore all things fantastical: castles, dungeons, labyrinths, mythological creatures, folklore, fantasy games, sacred grounds, art, literature, and history. Along the way, celebrities, experts and fanatics will help showcase the history of each episode’s enchanted location, as the Dungeon Masters uncover the root of legends and myths, and learn what has inspired storytelling since the beginning of civilization.

The first episode is an extensive exploration of Iceland and features the hosts trekking the valley where Thor was rumoured to have struck the ground with his mighty hammer Mjolnir. Destination Fantastic has taken to Kickstarter to raise $100K+ for the completion of the pilot, and hopes to reach fundraising stretch goals to bring viewers 9 new episodes, and take us on epic adventures to New Zealand, Peru, Greece, the Easter Islands, Japan, Italy, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Episode 2’s location, New Zealand, has already been prepped and scouted, and merely awaits the presence of our amazing explorers. Stefan and Satine will survey some of the key locations of The Lord of the Rings films, and will seek out the wily Peter Jackson himself to catch a glimpse into the process of fantasy filmmaking!

Mid-campaign, Satine and Stefan will premier a portion of the pilot during Comic-Con 2019 in San Francisco.

The TV series joins the ranks of innumerable Kickstarter projects that celebrate the importance of community—whether within the gaming community or on the campaign trail.

Recent Kickstarter film and TV success stories include Critical Role’s The Legend of Vox Machina (2019), which made Kickstarter history by raising over $11M in record time; Period. End of Sentence. (2019), which won an Oscar for Best Documentary Short; the Netflix-acquired and critically acclaimed Knock Down the House (2019), featuring Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; and fan revivals of Veronica Mars (2014) and Mystery Science Theater 3000 (2017), among others.

This is such a wonderful and unique idea. A celebration of D&D is something we can all enjoy. Here is a sneak preview video for you to enjoy.
