Verge Attends: Wales Comic Con

On Saturday the 21st of April, I was lucky enough to attend this wonderful event at Wrexham Glyndŵr University. Even though the journey is long for me, I was granted a press pass and I knew I couldn’t miss the opportunity to join in with the celebration that this convention was throwing.

This year the event was celebrating its 10 year anniversary which is an incredible achievement for Wales Comic Con. The organiser (Jaime Milner) and his team did not disappoint with the guest lineup for this celebration. Sadly as can happen with all conventions, some of the main attractions had to cancel. This included film stars Val Kilmer (Top Gun, Batman Forever) and Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings, Stranger Things) Walking Dead guests Seth Gilliam, Alanna Masterson, Ross Marquand and the wrestler Rey Mysterio.

I just want to say as someone who has attended cons for many years that I know how gutting cancellations can be, especially ones of this magnitude. Always remember that it can’t be helped. If you were super excited to meet them it doesn’t have to be over for you, the day can still be amazing. Jaime has stated that he will try his best to reschedule them so there will always be another chance. Even though the convention lost those guests, it still had an incredible lineup.

It consisted of stars such as Billy Zane (Titanic/Back to the Future), Andrew Scott (Sherlock), Frankie Muniz (Malcolm in the Middle), just to name a very small amount of the actual people. If I just list the Films and TV works of stars who attended then it consisted of people from Lord of the Rings, Gotham, Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, Arrow, Buffy the Vampire Slayer then on top of that there was wrestlers and even voice actors from the popular game Overwatch. That to me sounds like the perfect line up to celebrate the conventions 10 year anniversary but also to celebrate being a geek, which is what conventions are best at doing. Wales Comic Con is no exception.

Cosplayer

If you don’t usually attend cons, you were able to meet these guests to have photo ops and/or autographs which can really make your day. There were plenty of stalls to fill your merchandise needs, if you’re like me you know that there is never a limit on how much fandom related merchandise you can own. The staff were all friendly, the weather was even lovely which is just a clear sign that the day was set out to be a good one.

I’ll discuss a few of the experiences I had with the guests I met as they made the con memorable. I chatted with James Mackenzie who is known for playing the legendary Raven on the CBBC show Raven. For me, this was the experience of meeting a childhood hero and he did not disappoint. The second I mentioned to him how Raven was a big part of my childhood he started quoting lines from the show which made my day. He talked to me about how having people come up and tell him that they love him and the show makes his 16 years of working on it all worthwhile. Guest and fan interaction such as this is one of the reasons I love attending conventions.

Me with Warwick Davis

I chatted to Cara Theobold who voices the character Tracer in Overwatch and recently her character appears in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. We discussed her thoughts on being considered a holy grail of pop culture and she said it was an honour. Cara mentioned how she never knew what she was getting into when she first voiced Tracer but how glad she is for it because of getting to meet all these lovely fans. The guests were clearly very happy to be at Wales Comic Con and I myself am so glad to have attended.

The only problems that arose on the day were queues and delays in the photo op area. This can be expected at any convention. I just want to say that I commend the staff, as they tried there very best to deal with it any way they could. At the end of it I still left knowing I had a fun day, met some lovely guests and that’s all I need from a convention. I mean who doesn’t love a day out in the sun, celebrating a love for Film and TV?

I recommend that you keep an eye out for Wales Comic Con. They run two events a year, one in April and one in December. Wales Comic Cons next event will be held on December the 1st and 2nd if you would like to attend. They have already announced Hellboy and Sons of Anarchy star Ron Perlman with many more to be announced. I will post the link is below for the website. So please check it out and go have some fun at a great convention!
