New research from housebuilder Avant Homes has revealed the top five home decor trends of 2023 so far, using search volume uplifts and the number of mentions on Instagram. The initial list of trends was collated by looking at what experts had predicted would be popular prior to this year and then measured against the metrics mentioned above. We asked some interior design experts to provide their insights and opinions on why these trends are so popular.
Muted colours
This year is seeing homeowners move towards colours with low saturation or chroma and away from vivid colours. In February, the search term ‘muted colours’ experienced a 100% uplift in search volume and currently has 22,759 mentions on Instagram.
“Choosing muted colours in your décor is a great way to create a more laid-back feel. Muted colours can help to make your home feel more relaxed and calm. Scandi interiors and biophilic designs are becoming increasingly popular and muted colours work extremely well when mixed with these décor trends. Muted green, grey and blue tones are very popular options. Muted shades work well as paint colours as they constantly change throughout the day, depending on the lighting at that particular time of the day.”

Bespoke storage
People are increasingly looking for customised storage solutions which maximise the space in bedrooms, kitchens and living areas. Bespoke storage also means homeowners can purchase items that fit with the aesthetics of their homes.
“Storage is an unsung hero to any home, whether the function is to display a collection, hide clutter or fulfil a work-from-home need. Homeowners are asking more from their storage and require it to be multifunctional as well as beautiful. This trend is influencing our designs within our show home interiors as we have seen a growing demand for bespoke joinery, built-in wall shelves and custom-made fitted desks.”

Heritage Tiles
It was widely acknowledged that heritage tiles made a comeback in 2022 after years of homeowners opting for plainer designs. That has carried over to 2023 with a 100% increase in searches from February to March and 3,085 mentions on Instagram.
Hazel commented on the revitalised trend: “Heritage tiles are a great way to enliven bathrooms, kitchens or hallways with fun, colour and pattern. They evoke a sense of timeless heritage and when paired with more modern fittings they can be a characterful and eclectic feature.“
Warm woods
Woods with warm undertones such as cherry, mahogany, and hickory are clearly on the rise as a home decor trend with a 100% increase in searches during March and over 1,400 mentions on Instagram.
“The great thing about this trend is the abundance of modern and vintage warm wood pieces that are on the market today. Investing in wooden furniture in classic shapes and warm tones, such as teak, mahogany and walnut, is not only on-trend at the moment but will also stand the test of time as it can be styled in a variety of ways to suit your taste.”

Textured ceilings
Textured ceilings are making a comeback after almost universally being classed as ‘outdated’ by most experts. Between February and March, they received 1,211 tags on Insta and a 100% uplift in searches.
Tracey agrees saying; “While textured walls and ceilings may bring back bad interior memories of years gone by, if done well, adding natural texture through exposed brick, concrete or plaster can create a bohemian look that feels effortless and pairs well with the popular colours of the moment.”
