A multi-country study commissioned by Pukka Herbs found that, across the five countries surveyed, 42% of people experience poor quality sleep and feelings of overtiredness as a result of stress. Furthermore, roughly 62% of adults worldwide feel that they don’t sleep well

Whilst sleep satisfaction patterns and time asleep varies from country to country, one thing that’s consistent is that, on average, people worldwide don’t get enough.

Euan’s three top tips for a restful night’s sleep:

  • Get out and about – daylight is key to regulating daily sleep patterns as exposure to natural light helps us stay in tune with our circadian rhythm to support the body’s natural balance of hormones, including melatonin. Morning daylight has been shown to be especially beneficial to supporting getting better sleep, so, if you can, try to get out in the early morning or even late afternoon for a walk or run to absorb some natural daylight.

  • Eat earlier – Ayurveda (the ‘science of wellbeing’ that developed in India over 5000 years ago) sees that our digestive capacity rapidly diminishes after sunset. A good rule of thumb for the best time to eat dinner is at least two to three hours before getting into bed, so enjoy a light dinner by 7pm so digestion doesn’t disturb you getting to sleep.

  • Set up a good wind-down routine – at least one hour before bed, turn off all your devices or leave them in another room (and keep them out of the bedroom at night). For the last 30 minutes or so, do something you find really relaxing such as having a warm bath, or reading a book. Brew a cup of your Night Time tea and get ready to enjoy your sleep again.
