Samsung has officially entered the AI glasses race. Unveiled during Galaxy Unpacked July 2026, Samsung’s new Intelligent Eyewear represents the company’s first major step into wearable AI beyond smartphones, offering hands-free assistance, real-time translations, AI-powered experiences, and seamless integration with the Galaxy ecosystem.
The intelligent glasses, which will launch in select markets later this year, combine Samsung’s expertise in smartphones, wearables and extended reality (XR) to create what the company believes could become the next major interface for artificial intelligence.
If successful, Samsung’s Intelligent Eyewear could reshape how users interact with AI—without constantly reaching for their phone.
Samsung Wants AI to Move Beyond the Smartphone
For years, smartphones have been the centre of the mobile experience. Samsung believes the next evolution is wearable AI that understands what users are seeing, hearing and experiencing in real time.
Speaking to Samsung Newsroom, James Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of the XR R&D Team within Samsung’s Mobile eXperience (MX) division, explained that the goal isn’t to replace smartphones entirely.
Instead, Samsung wants AI glasses to reduce the number of times users need to pull out their phone while still delivering the same intelligent experiences through a more natural interface.
Using built-in cameras, microphones and speakers, the glasses are designed to understand a user’s surroundings and provide contextual AI assistance as events unfold.
Lightweight Design Meets Advanced Engineering
Unlike many early smart glasses, Samsung says wearability was one of its biggest priorities.
The company focused on creating glasses that look and feel like everyday eyewear rather than bulky technology.
Key engineering highlights include:
- Slim, lightweight frame
- Patented slim hinge system
- Advanced thin-wall moulding
- Lightweight construction materials
- Improved heat management
- Balanced weight distribution across the frame
- Reinforced temple architecture for greater durability
Samsung revealed it has filed around 200 patent applications relating to Intelligent Eyewear, highlighting its long-term investment in the emerging AI glasses market.
Battery Life Designed for All-Day AI
Despite its compact size, Samsung claims Intelligent Eyewear can deliver:
- Up to 9 hours of active use
- Support for demanding AI experiences including Gemini
- Video recording capabilities
- More than seven additional charges via the included charging case
The company says hardware and software optimisation helped maximise battery efficiency without increasing the size or weight of the glasses.
Galaxy AI Features Built Into Everyday Life
Samsung’s Intelligent Eyewear is designed to bring Galaxy AI into real-world situations through hands-free interaction.
Potential use cases include:
- Real-time language translation
- Context-aware AI assistance
- Live navigation guidance
- Voice conversations with AI
- Hands-free photo and video capture
- Line-of-sight recording
Rather than interrupting activities by reaching for a smartphone, users can interact with AI naturally while remaining focused on their surroundings.
Built Around the Galaxy Ecosystem
One of Samsung’s biggest advantages is its growing ecosystem of connected Galaxy devices.
Intelligent Eyewear works alongside Galaxy smartphones, Galaxy Watches and Galaxy Buds to create a connected AI experience.
Examples include:
- Recording video hands-free using the glasses
- Viewing captured footage instantly through the Now Bar
- Automatically accessing recordings inside Galaxy Gallery
- Managing the glasses directly from a Galaxy Watch
- Switching audio seamlessly with Galaxy Buds
Samsung also uses split computing, allowing processing tasks to be shared between the glasses and a connected Galaxy smartphone for improved performance and efficiency.
Privacy Features Take Centre Stage
With wearable cameras becoming increasingly common, Samsung says privacy has been a major consideration throughout development.
Several built-in safeguards aim to make recording more transparent:
- External LED recording indicator
- Internal LED notification for the wearer
- Automatic recording shutdown when glasses are removed
- Recording disabled if the external recording indicator becomes obstructed
Samsung also confirmed that users’ audio, video and screen-sharing data will not be used to train AI models, while privacy settings can be managed through a connected Galaxy phone.
Samsung’s Long-Term Vision for AI Glasses
Samsung sees Intelligent Eyewear as the beginning of a much larger wearable AI strategy.
Following its success in helping popularise foldable smartphones, the company hopes to establish a benchmark for AI glasses by combining practical everyday design with powerful mobile AI capabilities.
Rather than replacing smartphones overnight, Samsung envisions Intelligent Eyewear becoming another intelligent companion device that complements existing Galaxy products while making AI more accessible throughout the day.
As competition in wearable AI continues to grow, Samsung’s entry into the category positions the company alongside other major technology firms investing heavily in smart glasses and extended reality devices.
Whether Intelligent Eyewear becomes as transformative as smartphones or smartwatches remains to be seen, but Samsung is clearly betting that the future of mobile AI won’t always be held in your hand.
