Nike unveils the first ever bespoke kit for the England’s Women team

For the first time in history, Nike has unveiled an innovative kit designed specifically for the England Women’s Senior football team ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019.

Rather than share a kit design with the senior men’s team, as has previously been the case, the Lionesses will head into the tournament sporting a fresh take on the traditional white kit, accented by dark red cuffs. The socks debut a custom hand-drawn print for the Lionesses highlighting specific flora native to the counties and regions of England. The stunning away kit is a dark red crush colour, which is a unique darker shade exclusively for the women’s team and incorporates the St. George’s Cross on the shirt and a tonal crest unique to the Lionesses. The 2019 England Women’s Collection also includes an anthem jacket, training apparel and an off-pitch collection.

Nike have created designs for each of its sponsored nations heading to the tournament this year, with highlights including a French jersey incorporating the dotted styles of French fashion, rose gold detailing and an Art Deco font, and a kit for current champions the USA which is inspired by the transformative team of ’99. The fit of all team kits have been designed to specifically support female footballers to perform at the highest level.

Design for the 14 National Team Kits began with gathering detailed input on fit from professional footballers, followed by 4-D scanning and motion capture in the Nike Sports Research Lab. Beyond innovations in fit, the National Team Kits also reflect Nike’s continued commitment to being the world’s most sustainable sports brand, with each 2019 Nike Kit constructed from at least 12 recycled plastic bottles. Since 2010, Nike has diverted more than 6 billion plastic bottles from landfills through sustainable product design.

Semi-finalists in the last two major tournaments, England’s women head to France ranked among the world’s elite. Its talented players, including Fran Kirby, Lucy Bronze, Toni Duggan and captain Steph Houghton, assure a confident style of play that has rallied the nation behind them.

The Lionesses’ new kits, both home and away, progress the English Football Association’s aesthetic and tie the team to the country at large.

It is great to see kits designed specifically with us in mind, the home kit is really classic, while the pattern of the away is exciting and new.

Says Kirby.

A fresh take on the traditional white kit, the 2019 England Women’s home look is accented by dark red cuffs. “The flood-white look gives an aura of strength and purity. This minimalism translates as sophistication and confidence — perfect for this team,” says Cassie Looker, Nike Women’s Football Apparel Lead.

The socks debut a custom hand-drawn print for the Lionesses highlighting specific flora native to the counties and regions of England. “The common poppy, primrose, rosebay willowherb, wood anemone, spring gentian, Nottingham catchfly and traditional rose intermingle with the hop to form a floral pattern that represents the entire country,” explains Looker.

Though used sparingly on the home kit, this pattern forms the basis, covering both shirt and socks, for a brilliant new articulation of England’s classic red away strip. Rendered in a dark red crush, a darker shade exclusively for the women’s team, the kit incorporates the St. George’s Cross on the shirt and a unique dark red crush-colored crest exclusive to the Lionesses.

England’s new away strip is rendered in an exclusive dark red crush for the Lionesses.

We have gone close a couple of times now and the response has been amazing,” says captain Houghton. “It feels like there is genuine momentum behind the team, bigger and bigger with each major tournament we play, and another successful summer can really help push women’s football to the next level.

The 2019 England Women’s Collection also includes an anthem jacket, training apparel and an off-pitch collection.
