NATURE ASMR TRENDS SURGE AS 85% OF BRITS SAY SEASIDE SOUNDS HELP THEM RELAX

As searches for nature-inspired ASMR content continue to soar, new research suggests that the simple sounds of the seaside could be one of the UK’s most effective natural stress relievers.

According to a new Holiday ASMR Report from Away Resorts, 85% of Brits say the sounds of the seaside help them disconnect from everyday pressures, highlighting the growing importance of nature-based relaxation in an increasingly digital world.

The findings come as online interest in nature ASMR reaches new heights, with searches for “woodland sounds” increasing by 9,300% and “sand ASMR” rising by 8,500% over the past year. Meanwhile, wellness trends such as forest bathing continue to gain momentum across social media, attracting more than one million posts worldwide.

Why Nature ASMR Is Becoming More Popular

Nature ASMR has emerged as a popular way for people to manage stress, improve focus and create moments of calm. Unlike traditional ASMR content, which often features whispering or tapping sounds, nature ASMR centres on environmental sounds such as waves, rainfall, birdsong and rustling leaves.

The report, commissioned by Away Resorts and based on responses from 3,000 people across 17 UK cities, explored the sounds, smells and sensory experiences that holidaymakers associate with relaxation.

The results reveal a strong connection between natural environments and emotional wellbeing, particularly during holidays when people are looking to escape daily distractions.

The Most Relaxing Holiday Sounds, According to Brits

When asked which sounds help them unwind the most, water-based soundscapes dominated the rankings.

The top-rated relaxing holiday sounds were:

  • Waves moving over pebbles (83%)
  • Flowing water in streams or rivers (82%)
  • Waves crashing on the shore (82%)

Nearly half of respondents described these sounds as “very relaxing.”

The emotional impact of seaside soundscapes was equally significant. Among those surveyed:

  • 40% said the sound of the sea makes them feel peaceful
  • 39% said it helps them feel calm
  • 32% said it makes them feel happy

The connection extends beyond sound alone. More than 71% of participants reported that walking barefoot on sand provides a calming sensory experience.

The Holiday Scents That Trigger Happy Memories

Smell plays a powerful role in memory and emotional wellbeing, and the research found that certain holiday scents instantly evoke feelings of happiness and nostalgia.

The top holiday smells that make Brits happiest include:

  1. Sea air or saltwater (45%)
  2. BBQs (39%)
  3. Meadow and wildflowers (38%)
  4. Freshly cut grass (37%)

These familiar scents were strongly associated with staycations, beach holidays and memorable summer experiences.

Expert Explains Why Nature Helps Us Switch Off

To better understand the science behind these findings, Away Resorts partnered with Chartered Clinical Psychologist Dr Kate Mason.

According to Dr Mason, natural environments provide sensory experiences that the brain perceives as safe and predictable.

“One reason is that natural sensory input tends to be gentle, rhythmic and predictable. Think about sounds such as waves, wind in trees, or birdsong; these are processed by the brain as ‘non-threatening’ stimuli, which can help shift the nervous system away from the stress (or fight-flight) response and towards a calmer state often referred to as ‘rest and digest’.”

She also explained that spending time in nature can reduce cognitive load.

“Modern life bombards us with constant information: notifications, screens, traffic, and artificial lighting. Nature, by contrast, provides soft sensory engagement that allows the brain to rest and recover, which can improve mood and reduce mental fatigue.”

Nature’s Role in Modern Wellness

As stress levels remain high and digital fatigue continues to affect many people, it’s no surprise that nature ASMR and outdoor wellness trends are gaining popularity.

Whether it’s listening to waves crashing on a beach, enjoying the scent of sea air, or simply taking a barefoot walk across the sand, the report suggests that reconnecting with nature may offer a simple yet powerful way to improve wellbeing.

The rise of nature ASMR reflects a growing desire among Brits to find calm in everyday life. With 85% of people saying seaside sounds help them relax, the natural world continues to prove itself as one of the most accessible tools for reducing stress and supporting mental wellbeing.

As wellness trends evolve, the answer to feeling more relaxed may be as simple as listening to the waves.
