On May 1st, 2005 Lionel Messi scored his very first Barcelona goal against Albacete in the 34th league game of the season. Messi entered the action in the 87th minute to replace Samuel Eto’o and a mere four minutes later found himself on the receiving end of a gem of a pass from Ronaldinho. Showing a level of composure that would become iconic, Messi lobbed the keeper into the empty net… and the rest was history.

The world was a very different place back then…:

  • Tony Blair (Labour) was Prime Minister of England
  • George W. Bush (Republican) was US President
  • Comedy icon Peter Kay had taken “Is this the way to Amarillo” to No.1 in the charts
  • Kingdom of Heaven starring Orlando Bloom and directed by Ridley Scott was the must-see film in cinemas
  • Chelsea were 11 points clear of Arsenal in the Premier League
  • Barcelona were top of LaLiga with 78 points, just ahead of rivals Real Madrid
  • Harlequins were relegated from the Zurich Premier League.
  • Ann Coulter was on the front of TIME Magazine
  • Harlequins were relegated from the Zurich Premier League.
