The LEGO Group has partnered with Austria’s renowned Belvedere Museum to launch its biggest LEGO Art Masterpiece set to date, recreating Gustav Klimt’s iconic painting The Kiss in stunning brick-built form.
Featuring an impressive 4,000 pieces, the new LEGO Art Gustav Klimt – The Kiss set (31221) transforms one of the most celebrated artworks in history into a detailed three-dimensional display piece. The collaboration combines fine art, design and mindful building, offering LEGO fans and art lovers a unique way to engage with a masterpiece that has captivated audiences for more than a century.
A LEGO Tribute to Gustav Klimt’s Most Famous Painting
Inspired by Gustav Klimt’s original artwork, the set captures the painter’s distinctive use of gold tones, intricate ornamentation and rich symbolism.
The design features metallic gold LEGO elements, layered textures and specially decorated pieces that recreate the famous embracing couple seen in the original painting. Decorative circles, spirals, floral motifs and familiar LEGO studs work together to bring Klimt’s artistic vision to life in brick form.
According to LEGO Master Model Designer Milan Madge, recreating The Kiss required careful attention to the artwork’s signature textures and golden colour palette while maintaining the spirit of the original masterpiece.
Developed with Vienna’s Belvedere Museum
A key part of the project involved close collaboration with the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, where Klimt’s original painting is permanently displayed.
Museum curator Stephanie Auer worked alongside the LEGO design team to ensure important artistic details, including the painting’s composition, symbolism and decorative elements, were faithfully translated into LEGO form.
The partnership reflects LEGO’s growing focus on bringing world-famous works of art into its LEGO Art range, allowing fans to experience iconic cultural landmarks and masterpieces through creative building.
Podcast Explores the Story Behind the Set
To accompany the launch, LEGO has produced a dedicated podcast episode featuring Milan Madge and Stephanie Auer.
Available from launch day through LEGO’s official website as well as Spotify and YouTube, the discussion explores Gustav Klimt’s artistic legacy, the significance of The Kiss, and the challenges involved in recreating such an influential artwork using LEGO bricks.
The episode is designed to complement the building experience, providing additional insight into both the artwork and the design process.
LEGO Builder App Integration
Builders can also use the LEGO Builder App to access interactive 3D building instructions, track progress and explore the model from multiple angles during construction.
The digital experience aims to make assembling the 4,000-piece set more accessible while adding an extra layer of engagement for collectors and builders.
