To celebrate the promotion of SD Huesca, Cádiz CF and Elche CF to the top flight of Spanish football, LaLiga invited three UK-based fans to its London offices last week to officially add each club’s crest to the display wall featuring 2020/21 teams of LaLiga Santander and LaLiga SmartBank.
Supporters Diego Pesqué (SD Huesca), Guillermo Lázaro (Cádiz CF) and Rosa López(Elche CF) were each placed in charge of incorporating their club’s crest into the ranks of the other 17 sides competing this season in LaLiga Santander, including champions Real Madrid, Europa League winners Sevilla FC, FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, among others.
Said Keegan Pierce of LaLiga: “Fans are the lifeblood of LaLiga, and a key aspect of our international strategy is to maintain close contact with supporters all around the world. That’s why we’re so proud to host Diego, Guillermo and Rosa at our London offices to officially welcome SD Huesca, Cádiz CF and Elche CF to LaLiga Santander.”
Added fellow LaLiga UK & Ireland delegate Javier del Río: “We’re very excited about LaLiga starting again. And what better way to celebrate than here in London with fans from all three promoted clubs. We look forward to a very exciting season ahead.”
Said Diego Pesqué, a London resident of 15+ years and founder of the SD Huesca Fan Club England: “It represents such great pride for Huesca to be back in LaLiga. It’s a great opportunity that puts the city and the province back on the map, both nationally and internationally.”
Elche native Rosa López, who moved to the UK to work for the London 2012 Olympics, said: “This is like a dream for me, it’s so exciting. Everyone knows about LaLiga around the world, everyone talks about LaLiga, watches LaLiga, and discusses about LaLiga. And I want them to discuss about Elche as well.”
Guillermo Lázaro, who attended his first Cádiz match at the age of seven, marked the occasion with words of memory for legendary Spanish TV commentator and former footballer Michael Robinson, who passed away in April after a long battle with melanoma. “Michael Robinson has always been important for Cádiz,” said Lázaro. “We hope he’s up there watching us and enjoying Cádiz’s return to the top flight.”
LaLiga Santander returned to action this past weekend, with 14 of 20 top-flight sides playing their opening fixture, including 2020/21 season debuts for Cádiz CF (who fell 0-1 to CA Osasuna) and SD Huesca (who managed a 1-1 draw at Villarreal). The remaining six LaLiga Santander sides will return during the coming fortnight, including newly promoted Elche CF and 2019/20 champions Real Madrid; FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Getafe CF; as well as Europa League winners Sevilla FC.
All the action from LaLiga Santander can be followed live in the UK and Ireland on the premium 24/7 television channel LaLigaTV, available on the Sky UK and Sky Ireland TV platforms, as well as on Virgin TV and the Premier Player streaming service.
