GREGGS UNVEILS 8-METRE SAUSAGE ROLL ‘TA-PASTRY’ AT LONDON’S DESIGN MUSEUM FOR NATIONAL SAUSAGE ROLL DAY!

The humble Greggs Sausage Roll has officially been elevated to the status of British cultural icon, thanks to a unique new exhibition unveiled in London this week.

To mark National Sausage Roll Day on 5th June, Greggs has partnered with master embroiderers and the Design Museum to create an extraordinary 8-metre-long embroidered artwork dubbed the ‘Ta-Pastry’, celebrating the legendary history of one of Britain’s favourite baked treats.

The installation will be on display for two days only at the Design Museum, offering visitors a chance to witness a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the nation’s enduring love affair with the Greggs Sausage Roll.

A Modern Take on the Bayeux Tapestry

The ambitious project arrives ahead of the historic return of the famous Bayeux Tapestry to the UK later this year.

Inspired by the legendary medieval masterpiece, Greggs has created its own contemporary version that chronicles the evolution of the bakery giant and its most iconic menu item.

Rather than depicting kings, battles and conquests, the Ta-Pastry showcases the cultural significance of Greggs and its place in British life, celebrating milestones that have helped shape the brand over nearly a century.

The exhibition offers a playful and distinctly British interpretation of historical storytelling, complete with decorative borders, Latin-inspired chapter titles and detailed embroidery.

Crafted by Royal Embroiderers

To bring the ambitious project to life, Greggs enlisted the expertise of Hawthorne & Heany, a renowned independent embroidery and design atelier whose artisans have worked on projects for royalty, luxury brands and cultural institutions.

The finished piece measures an impressive eight metres in length and features:

  • 5,521,238 stitches
  • 3,679 trims
  • 29,147.82 metres of top thread
  • 10,693.53 metres of bobbin thread
  • 200 hours of meticulous hand-stitching

Using thirteen symbolic thread colours, including Greggs Blue and Pastry Gold, the artwork combines traditional craftsmanship with modern British culture.

Telling the Story of Greggs Through the Ages

The Ta-Pastry is divided into six illustrated chapters that guide viewers through key moments in Greggs’ history.

The narrative begins with Ortus Primus (The Early Beginnings), depicting founder John Gregg delivering bakery products by bicycle through the streets of Newcastle.

It then moves through major milestones, including the launch of the hugely successful Vegan Sausage Roll, described within the artwork as Rotulus Omnia Aevia Perdurat (The Great Divide), before culminating in Victor Mundi (Victory of the World), celebrating the Sausage Roll’s place in British culture today.

Greggs and the Design Museum Celebrate a British Icon

Speaking about the project, Zoe Harris, Customer Director at Greggs, said:

“The Greggs Sausage Roll is woven into the very fabric of British culture, which is why for National Sausage Roll Day we’ve partnered with master royal embroiderers and the Design Museum to create an 8-metre ‘Ta-Pastry’.”

She added that the hand-stitched artwork serves as a fitting tribute to a beloved British favourite that has become far more than just a bakery snack.

Meanwhile, Tim Marlow, Chief Executive and Director of the Design Museum, described the installation as:

“A mouth-watering appetiser for the Bayeux mania to come.”
