FROBELLES LAUNCHES DEBUT EP ‘FROBELLES FOREVER’ CELEBRATING BLACK GIRLHOOD AND NATURAL HAIR

Frobelles is taking its message of confidence, self-love and representation into music with the launch of its debut six-track EP, Frobelles Forever.

The children’s empowerment platform, which champions afro hair and Black girlhood, has released the EP across streaming platforms, giving young listeners a collection of upbeat pop tracks inspired by everyday experiences, from wash day and summer braids to birthdays, friendship and sisterhood.

Founded by mother-daughter duo Yvonne Ottley-Awuah and Alyssa Awuah, Frobelles began with a simple question from Alyssa when she was just six years old: why didn’t the characters in the dress-up games she played have natural afro hair like hers?

That question sparked the creation of Frobelles, an inclusive digital world built around characters Coco, Kelli and Krista. Since then, the idea has grown into a wider empowerment platform designed to celebrate natural hair and challenge negative stereotypes surrounding Black beauty.

Frobelles Takes Its Message Into Music

With Frobelles Forever, Frobelles is expanding its approach to representation beyond what children see on screen and into the music they listen to.

The six songs explore different aspects of Black girlhood while delivering a wider message of confidence, belonging and self-acceptance. The EP aims to create music that children will genuinely want to listen to repeatedly, while ensuring the messages within those songs are positive and empowering.

From singing along in the car to dancing around the house with friends, Frobelles hopes the EP will make conversations around natural hair and confidence feel fun, familiar and joyful.

The project arrives against a backdrop of continued conversations around Black hair discrimination in the UK. The Equality and Human Rights Commission has published guidance for schools on preventing hair discrimination, highlighting the importance of ensuring children are not unfairly treated because of their hair.

What Is On The ‘Frobelles Forever’ EP?

The new EP features six tracks, each exploring a different part of the Frobelles world.

1. Curls Like Crowns

Opening the EP’s message of self-acceptance, Curls Like Crowns is about those moments when you look in the mirror and wish your hair looked different.

The track celebrates every kink and coil, reminding listeners that natural hair isn’t something that needs to be fixed or changed.

2. Wash Day

Anyone familiar with afro hair will know that wash day can be a serious event.

Wash Day celebrates the time, care and love that goes into looking after natural hair, turning a familiar routine into a joyful celebration.

3. Birthday Girl

Birthday Girl brings the party energy, focusing on favourite outfits, messages from friends and sisters cheering from the sidelines.

It’s a straightforward celebration of feeling special and enjoying a day that’s all about you.

4. Frobelles Forever

The title track focuses on the friendship between Coco, Kelli and Krista.

Although each character has her own personality, talents and strengths, together they bring out the best in one another — reinforcing the EP’s wider themes of friendship, sisterhood and community.

5. Summer Braids

Summer Braids captures the excitement of school finishing and getting ready for the holidays.

With family, tradition and trips to Auntie’s house at its heart, the song celebrates the anticipation of summer and the familiar ritual of getting those holiday braids ready.

6. Hair Slay Anthem

Closing the EP is Hair Slay Anthem, a celebration of natural afro hair, melanin, confidence and belonging.

The track brings together the EP’s central message: being proud of exactly who you are.

“A Love Letter To Black Girlhood”

Yvonne Ottley-Awuah, co-founder of Frobelles, describes Frobelles Forever as a “love letter to Black girlhood”, while also wanting the project to stand alone as genuinely fun pop music.

“The songs are about things they know and love, from wash day and summer braids to birthdays, sisters and those moments when you need reminding how brilliant you are.”

She also highlighted the importance of the messages children absorb through music, particularly during the years when they are developing their ideas around identity and beauty.

For Frobelles, that means creating an alternative to messages that suggest natural afro hair should look different or be easier to manage.

Instead, the EP presents natural hair as joyful, normal and something worth celebrating.

From A Dress-Up Game To A Growing Empowerment Platform

Frobelles Forever represents the latest chapter in the brand’s rapid growth.

What began as an idea around the family kitchen table has now reached more than 100,000 app users, with Frobelles also collaborating with the Apple App Store and Google Play on Black History Month campaigns.

The brand has been recognised by Entrepreneur’s London 100 and the Startups 100, while Frobelles has also won an FSB Celebrating Small Business Award for Young Entrepreneur.

Alyssa Awuah additionally became the youngest winner of the PRECIOUS Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, sponsored by Santander, in the awards’ 18-year history.

The company has also signed a licensing deal with Hero Brands, opening the door for Frobelles to expand into toys, clothing, hair accessories and animation.

Alongside its digital platform, Frobelles is developing Frobelles Studio, a programme of real-world experiences aimed at girls aged six to 12.

An empowering product line is also set to launch later this year through TikTok Shop.
