For those who miss the wizarding world of Harry Potter which was brought into our lives by the genius that is J.K. Rowling, it will make your day to see the author’s “prequel†to the world-famous books is getting underway. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them marks Rowling’s screenwriting debut and has already been confirmed as a trilogy. David Yates, director of the last four Harry Potter films, is directing the first of the three, so expect to feel all nostalgic upon its release.
Fantastic Beasts is based on the Hogwarts textbook of the same name but will follow the adventures of its author, Newt Scamander, who is played by the Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne. His character is described as a “magizoologist†– someone who studies magical creatures, of course.
Eddie Redmayne will not be the only famous face that we recognise in the film. Colin Farrel, Jon Voight and Katherine Waterston will also feature, making this probably one of the highest-anticipated films of 2016.
Specifics on the story have not been revealed but we know that it will be set in 1920s New York, 70 years before we are introduced to Harry Potter and co. It is rumoured that it will feature an American wizarding school, similar to Hogwarts and will also see the U.S. equivalent of the Ministry of Magic, the “Magical Congress of the United States of America†– sounds powerful, right?
Sadly, we will have to wait until November 2016 to be re-absorbed by the wizarding world, but for now we can see what to expect from the film in its first images released by Entertainment Weekly. See all of the pictures here.
