FIN-TASTIC TRIBUTE: SEA LIFE LONDON AQUARIUM SCORES WITH LIONESSFISH LINEUP

SEA LIFE London Aquarium has hit the back of the net with the help of the nation by announcing the renaming of its beloved Lionfish and welcoming new members to the underwater squad.

In a fin-tastic tribute to the nation’s footballing heroes, the Lionfish will be named after past and present legendary Lionesses as the team heads out to Switzerland today for the 2025 UEFA Women’s EUROs.

The attraction’s Lionfish squad, now known as the LionESSfish, were named by SEA LIFE London Aquarium’s Instagram followers who were invited to cast their votes and pay homage to their favourite past and present players.

The votes have led to SEA LIFE London Aquarium’s school of Lionfish being named:

  • Jill Scott
  • Mary Earps
  • Lucy Bronze
  • Beth Mead
  • Leah Williamson
  • Alessia Russo

“We’re absolutely thrilled to unveil our newly named LionESSfish squad inspired by the incredible achievements of past and present Lionesses,” said Neil Harris, General Manager at SEA LIFE London Aquarium. “It’s a wonderful way for us and our guests to give our national team the best send-off as they fly to Switzerland today. Naming our Lionfish after Jill Scott – or should we say, GILL Scott, Mary Earps, Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead, Leah Williamson, and Alessia Russo brings a touch of inspiration and excitement to the London Aquarium, and we hope to one day welcome the players to our attraction to meet their namesakes.

Known for their vibrant stripes and graceful fins, Lionfish are the perfect aquatic representatives of England’s fierce and fabulous Lionesses and are already forming a winning formation in their new home.

The mighty Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish can grow up to 17cm in size and are renowned for their fearlessly protective behaviours and agile movements, much like the Lionesses. Partnering with the Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish is the striking Fu manchu Lionfish. This species, reaching up to 12cm, is distinguished by

its vibrant colours and unique appendages at the corners of its mouth, which allow it to showcase predatory behaviours.

Guests can meet the new LionESSfish lineup at SEA LIFE London Aquarium, which is open seven days a week and situated on the South Bank. For the latest opening times, feeding times, prices and more see http://www.visitsealife.com/london/
